About this listen

Los Angeles D.A. Rachel Knight is a tenacious, wise-cracking, and fiercely intelligent prosecutor in the city's most elite division. When her colleague, Jake, is found dead at a grisly crime scene, Rachel is shaken to the core. She must take over his toughest case: the assault of a young woman from a prominent family.

But she can't stop herself from digging deeper into Jake's death, a decision that exposes a world of power and violence and will have her risking her reputation - and her life - to find the truth.

With her tremendous expertise in the nuances of L.A. courts and crime, and with a vibrant ensemble cast of characters, Marcia Clark combines intimate detail, riotous humor, and visceral action in a debut thriller that marks the launch of a major new figure on the crime-writing scene.

Okay, I'll admit it. I bought the book solely because of the author's name, having no idea whether Marcia Clark could write a good book. She could. Good story - several twists - humour - mystery - insight into the legal system. I'd read another.

Pleasant Surprise

Where does Guilt by Association rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its ok, not one I was dying to get back to but written and performed well enough to enjoy the story and take my mind off of the chore I was doing.

What about January LaVoy’s performance did you like?

J. LaVoy's performance was impressive. Handled accents very well.

Good story, good listen

What made the experience of listening to Guilt by Association the most enjoyable?

As a new author, I enjoy that the book was right up my alley. It grabbed my attention from chapter one and kept me guessing until the end.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the working relationship between Rachel and Bailey. They knew how to play off each other and it kept the book from dragging on and on. Didn't have the macho profanity, blood and BS in other novels. Since this is a new author, it was not a book that had a predictable ending. Thus, I didn't want to stop listening.

Which scene was your favorite?

In my mind, visualizing Rachel tackling a female assailant in a dark alley after she assaulted Rachel with her huge handbag made me chuckle. That being said, at times, Rachel really crossed the line between DA and cop. It was difficult to imagine a DA in some of the situations. Kidnapped, bullets whizzing by, chasing suspects down a dark alley......

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely. Fresh author kept me listening. And as the story continued, being able to tie the storylines together without effort into a seamless ending was amazing. I never felt like I was jumping between two different stories.

Any additional comments?

I think other authors in this genre will be hearing Marcia, Marcia, Marcia everywhere they go.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia........ What a start!

This book has been out for quite awhile and well reviewed. I bought it in an Audible sale and it was well worth it. Good enough for her first foray into crime fiction. Plan to read more of the series.

Good job Marcia

Of course I bought this book because Marcia Clark wrote it.... wow. Well-written, interesting and fast-paced with a tight story line. Loved all of the characters. Amazing narrator, one of the best I've heard, really made this story come alive. Ready to purchase her other books. Impressed this was her first book!

simply shocked at how much I liked it...

3 stars is a little generous, but it was better than a 2-star. I downloaded this book because Marcia Clark wrote it and that made me curious; it started off quite good! I have to say I was interested from the start.

After a while unfortunately, it just became tedious. I don’t give a bleep about what everyone is wearing all the time… (and incidentally, why is everyone “throwing on” their clothes? Can’t they just get dressed normally?) The clothing references (along with the hair, make-up, drinking, eating, and picking off other people’s plates references) just took up too much room and got on my nerves.

I also found the narrative over-described or over-explained, like I was forbidden to use my own imagination. It felt closed captioned!

Lastly I just didn’t appreciate the humour, it simply wasn’t that funny; if she was trying to achieve a Stephanie Plum vibe, she missed.

All these nitpicky things accumulated throughout the book and by the time I reached the end, I didn’t care whodunit anymore I just wanted to be done. Will I try another? Yes because this was her first attempt and so by default she’ll only get better.

Didn't love it, but I'll try again

Good plot(s). Good narration. Liked the characters though it seems the author tried a little too hard to make them over-the-top people. An entertaining read.

Sassy book

January la Voy is as brilliant as ever. I bought this book because she was narrating it. I didn't have high hopes, thinking this was just another celebrity author. But, I was pleasantly surprised by Marcia Clark's storytelling. Not brilliantly literary, but an easy, entertaining listen akin to Lisa scottoline's Benny Rosato series. Way to reinvent yourself, Marcia!!

a pleasant surprise

The main character is very conceited. Acts like no one is as good as her and looks down on everyone else even though for half the story she's carrying an illegal firearm. Way too much time spent focusing on how the main character doesn't want to eat carbs. Everyone besides the main characters are described as scum, etc. with little cultural awareness. Finally two of the main supporting characters just disappear halfway through the story with no explanation.

great narrator, poor story
