About this listen

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

It takes more than a lie to hide the dark secrets of this picture-perfect family.

When the granddaughter of one of Florida’s most powerful judges disappears, it triggers a personal trauma for Detective Alice Garner: the kidnapping and murder of her own child. As a flood of painful memories comes rushing back, Alice sees herself in the guilt-ridden and emotionally fragile mother Charlotte Burke, who has become the target of a rush to judgment.

All too familiar with Charlotte’s situation, Alice is reluctant to cast any blame. Her gut instincts tell her that Charlotte’s anguish is rooted in something else - somewhere too dark for the truth to be seen. And Alice believes that it’s hiding behind the façade of the illustrious and guarded Burke mansion.

But uncovering Charlotte’s past comes with a risk. For Alice’s own life is becoming entangled in the secrets and lies of the picture-perfect family - an image that is about to be shattered in so many unexpected ways.

Wow, great plot twister!!

Narrator did a great job with the various voices and accents. I kept going back and forth on who dunit! At last I realized I didn’t want to believe any of the suspects did it as the author brings the reader to empathize with them. Too bitter sweet with a drop off ending. Want more!!

Good Detective Story

It seemed so obvious throughout the majority of the book as to how it would end. Not so....it isn't what you'd expect. Good writing with a lot to cover before it comes to a 1/2 hour ending. I did not care too much for the narrator because it seemed to pleasant for the mood of the story, but then again, it was not my type of story.

Evil that lived hidden by power

Great story about real people and how their trauma changes their lives. Changes that are all consuming and creating soulless victims. Victims who transition into monsters. Beyond excellent!

I loved that I never got a clue who killed Ruby! It was a surprise all the way until the end!

amazingly heartbreaking

This is a story that will make contemplate the question "what would YOU do?" The story skips around in time quite a bit, and at times it was hard to keep it all straight in my head. But wow oh wow! Worth the listen

Not perfect but worth reading

This is a tough one to review. It’s not the best murder mystery I’ve read, but it is solid enough to be interesting, and the end is believable enough to work.

I did think it was a bit long – around the 9 hour mark, I started to feel it needed to wrap up only to realise I was still 3 hours from the end. That said, I didn’t ever feel that there was unnecessary padding, everything felt like it was pretty necessary to fully explain the story.

Most of the characters are pretty well fleshed out and you get a good feel for them. There are some, like Hollis who despite the amount written about her, comes off as pretty one dimensional. I found her particularly odd given a significant amount of motivations revolve around her.

I’m also a little torn about the reader – while she does excellent accents, and the emotional sections are well done, I did think she came off as a bit robotic at times.

This is a solid enough mystery, it’s not perfect but I don’t feel at all like I wasted my time reading it. This is one of those books where my review is going to be lacklustre because it didn’t make me feel anything strongly enough to have firm opinions about. I got it on sale so got my money’s worth, it’s worth listening to.

Better than expected

Not the usual plot. I wasn't sure if the guilty party until near the end. After reading the same old story over and over, this was a nice surprise.
