About this listen

A historical adventure book set in the rugged East Coast of Canada during the early 20th century.

"Ghost River" delves into the enthralling account of Jean Savage, a resolute Frenchman treacherously maneuvering the biting wilderness to secure sled dogs and later rescue his cherished, Julie Barnes.
About the Novel:
Jean Savage, dismissing superstitions about the demon-infested Windigo lands, commences a perilous mission to find sled dogs critical for survival during the unforgiving winters at Whale River. His journey takes him into the intimidating areas, a source of dreaded myths amongst the Cree indigenes. Unfrightened by tales of mystical beings and menacing specters, Savage's pressing concern is the dwindling game and growing scarce supplies rather than the otherworldly cries alleged to disturb the darkness. His tenacity eventually bears fruit when he encounters a vigorous pup, Ridgway, at an Eskimo settlement, and he triumphantly returns to Whale River, experiencing narrow brushes with hostile encounters during the journey. The novel then intertwines Savage's existence with that of Julie Barnes, a girl for whom he harbours intense affection. After a close call with the Eskimos and a victorious return with his prized husky, his aspiration is not just to gather admiration from his fellows, but also win over Julie.
A Test of Courage and Love:
Nevertheless, a sudden disease outbreak renders Julie critically ill, urgently needing medical attention. With unwavering resolve, Savage undertakes a desperate race against the ticking clock, braving a lethal winter tempest to fetch a medical doctor, John Hunter, from a far-off fort. This incredible journey, two days in a ferocious blizzard without respite, brings salvation for Julie but tests Savage's resilience and his dogs' loyalty to the limit. Despite distrust from skeptical contemporaries at various fur outposts, Savage's dogged determination and profound companionship with Ridgway play crucial roles in his success.Savage's grueling pursuit finally results in Julie's recovery, due to Hunter’s timely medical intervention. A blooming bond emerges amidst the slackening tight grip of winter, culminating in their spring nuptials, thus celebrating not just their love but the powerful camaraderie between man and his loyal dogs. Savage’s voyage through the eerie Windigo terrain, marked by wilderness trials and human courage, firmly establishes his legend and love story in the frozen expanses of the north.

Thin story, awful AI voice.

It was interesting to learn of the importance of dogs to the early traders in the north. The use of a computer to narrate the book did a disservice to the already threadbare plot and unidimensional characters.
