About this listen

Mary Minor “Harry” Harristeen is on the hunt for a killer with a deadly green thumb when a day in the garden turns fatal in this exciting new mystery from Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown.

Spring arrives in northern Virginia, and as the ground thaws and the peonies begin to bloom a bright magenta, the women of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church prepare for a Homecoming celebration like no other. In honor of the day, Harry, Susan Tucker, and their friends decide to remodel the gardens of the church based on the plants that would have grown in the time St. Luke’s was built, and plan to visit the historically accurate gardens of Montpelier to find inspiration in Dolley Madison’s climbing roses.

But the gardens have been visited by catastrophe - a patch near the back is torn up in the night, completely destroyed. Is this the work of a random vandal? Or was someone looking for something growing in that garden?

When Jeannie Cordle drops dead at a charity auction, poisoned by a fatal weed slipped into her drink, Harry’s worst suspicions are confirmed: a killer lurks in their midst, one with a keen understanding of poisonous plants. Although she can’t yet prove it, Harry believes the murder is related to the 18th-century skeleton discovered last year in the church graveyard, wearing an expensive necklace of diamonds and pearls. The identity of the skeleton remains unidentified, but the necklace is undoubtedly worth killing for.

With help from her feline sidekicks, Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, as well as Tee Tucker the corgi and sweet puppy Pirate, Harry sets out to find the weed in St. Luke’s garden - and stop a killer before they can strike again.

Another brilliant addition to the series.

I love how the characters evolve and how the author brings to life two separate times. Couldn't put it down!

Miss story , more mrs murphy,, and old friends.

I’m not the writer. You should write what you like naturally. IVe read series through a couple times. 1700 got more interesting in second read. But skipped a chapter in one book cuz all historical. Miss some old women friends And the more animal friends the better. I’m about to listen third time. :) but worry this will be more history than story.

Kate Forbes

Kate Forbes knocks it out of the park again. A favorite narrator. Seamlessly changes characters.

Very disappointed.

Rita Mae Brown is one of my favorite authors and I have listened to every book in the series so far. I was really excited to see there were two more books that I had not listened to. This book started out with major problems that almost caused me to return it in very short order. The narration was almost electronic if that makes sense. It did not sound as if a person was doing it rather that some electronic magic had compiled the narration. It was choppy, unnatural, just really bizarre especially because this is the same reader for all the books. It took several chapters before things smoothed out and sounded normal. Even then however there were times when it would slip back into the original mode but revert to natural relatively quickly.
The second big problem was the story this time. I agree with other reviewers that I desperately miss the original premise of the stories which was Harry, her animals, friends, and her life on the farm and in Crozet. About six books or seven books ago she switched to this historical intertwining and it was interesting - and I do understand that Rita Mae Brown has her education in history - but so much of the story became about that and in this book much of the last stories were repeated so much that it was tedious. I’m going to return this book and try the last one but if it continues then sadly I will say goodbye to Harry and her lovable animals.
