Acerca de esta escucha

From the bestselling author of Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, a fiendishly fun locked room (train) murder mystery that "offers a tip of the hat to the great Agatha Christie novel while at the same time being a modern reinvention of it" (Nita Prose)—perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Anthony Horowitz

When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

The program is a who’s who of crime writing royalty:

the debut writer (me!)

the forensic science writer

the blockbuster writer

the legal thriller writer

the literary writer

the psychological suspense writer

But when one of us is murdered, the remaining authors quickly turn into five detectives. Together, we should know how to solve a crime.

Of course, we should also know how to commit one.

How can you find a killer when all the suspects know how to get away with murder?

Editorial Review

All aboard!
I wanted to go on an outrageous, thrilling, yet fun ride with my first listen of 2024, and Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect delivered! As soon as I read the premise I thought, yes, put me on a train with a group of mystery writers, agents, publishers, editors, and fans as we journey from Darwin to Adelaide to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society. Of course, someone onboard ends up dead. Which expert sleuth will figure it out first? Whodunit? This is where the fun is. A telltale sign of a good story: As soon as I finished, I immediately downloaded Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone—where author Benjamin Stevenson first introduces his main character, Ernest Cunningham. I hear there might be a movie or TV show coming (rights have been secured), and I sure hope a third novel is in the works. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

I listened to both books back to back and I am still craving more. Excited to explore more Aussie crime novels.

Love this style

This author and series is great. He breaks the fourth wall constantly, talking about what makes a good whodunnit, and even reminding the reader about the list of suspects and who is just too obvious to end up being the actual killer. There are also a ton of funny observations throughout. Such as, "Usually a denouement does not have this much heckling." I did not solve the crime, but still had a great time on the ride.

Exciting and funny

I like the narrator, the way he read the book. The author, the book was quick humored, lively, very entertaining. Enjoyed the humor as well.

Fun mystery

I did enjoy this book almost as much as Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone. This one had interesting characters at the writer’s forum on the train. Love the narrator of this audiobook!

Ernest is back!

I enjoyed this book almost as much as I enjoyed the first book from this author. I'm glad the narrator was the same person as well. It mattered you the story. I was able to guess at some of the key parts but regardless, I was highly entertained.

I love the sarcastic, quirky storytelling.

Overall, I found the story enjoyable once the train left the station.... excuse the pun. I really lose patience for the first chapter or so when the author is setting everything up, breaking the fourth wall, so to speak..."the first death must occur within X number of words"... and so on. It's like reciting a list of references or credits before even starting the story. Gahhhhh, just get to it....you're putting me to sleep! Anyhow, once it got going, I think it was better than the first one, for me at least. The Christmas one looks interesting, and I may check that out too.

Enjoyable once it gets going

Me reading a sequel immediately after reading the first in a series is rare. I enjoyed the first novel quite a bit and the length of both books is perfect for my current schedule.

Barton Welch has again provided a varied cast of characters with unique voices and speech patterns. Megan Smart's addition to the presentation makes sense to the story and filled the role very well.

Again in this story, our protagonist is both the author and the main character. His writing process being a factor in how the story is told is still fun and quirky. Stevenson added what amounts to a game to the asides that may or may not be interesting to the reader. I, personally, chose to leave this challenge unattempted, but I expect others will find it entertaining.

The story is similar to the first story, but revolves less around the protagonists family. I feel Stevenson has he mystery and adds a lot of unknowns to the plot with this shift. I have no complaints about book #2, because all of my expectations were met.

I'll rate this one, "Another murder mystery on par with the classics with a load of fun characters and secrets," (I'm aware I'm cheating a bit, but don't care).
