About this listen

From the bestselling author of Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, a fiendishly fun locked room (train) murder mystery that "offers a tip of the hat to the great Agatha Christie novel while at the same time being a modern reinvention of it" (Nita Prose)—perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Anthony Horowitz

When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

The program is a who’s who of crime writing royalty:

the debut writer (me!)

the forensic science writer

the blockbuster writer

the legal thriller writer

the literary writer

the psychological suspense writer

But when one of us is murdered, the remaining authors quickly turn into five detectives. Together, we should know how to solve a crime.

Of course, we should also know how to commit one.

How can you find a killer when all the suspects know how to get away with murder?

Editorial Review

All aboard!
I wanted to go on an outrageous, thrilling, yet fun ride with my first listen of 2024, and Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect delivered! As soon as I read the premise I thought, yes, put me on a train with a group of mystery writers, agents, publishers, editors, and fans as we journey from Darwin to Adelaide to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society. Of course, someone onboard ends up dead. Which expert sleuth will figure it out first? Whodunit? This is where the fun is. A telltale sign of a good story: As soon as I finished, I immediately downloaded Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone—where author Benjamin Stevenson first introduces his main character, Ernest Cunningham. I hear there might be a movie or TV show coming (rights have been secured), and I sure hope a third novel is in the works. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

Clever writing

I enjoyed the clever and humorous word play in this book- I wish that it was linger because it was enjoyable. I didnt realize that there was one before this one. So, I am going to download it too. The narrator has a pleasant voice.

Choo choo!

My sister enjoyed this mystery and recommended it to me, so I got it on Audible. The narrator was good too. His Aussie accent wasn't too thick and he performed a good variety of voices.

I like that it was witty and that Ernest, the protagonist, broke the fourth wall.

There are lots of moving parts and clues to follow, but I liked this one better than the first. The reveal was easier to follow.

It was also funny to see Ernest and (I forgot his name already) the other author rival each other to solve the murder.

As for the name tally game...readers with an e-book can cheat/spoil themselves by searching for the name word count.

Charming self aware sequel

While there are certain challenges when writing a sequel in this genre, I thought this the self aware story really worked. I think the main character remains likable even when doing something unlikeable because of this self awareness. Def worth the read for whodunit fans!!

awesome sophomore installment

Yes, the 2nd book is better than the first and that is saying much. Can't wait for this series to continue.

The humor

I liked the pace and narrator in the story. He also referenced his first book. Why 15 words as a minimum in this review?

Slightly convoluted

I loved his book "Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone " but this one got a little confusing. I found it harder to track the characters and the story line got pretty tangly at the end.

Only finished because I used a credit

This book was not for me. Too many characters that were just hard to keep straight.

Outstanding!

I loved this so much! I finished in one sitting. My only sorrow is I will now have to wait a year or more for the next one. Please let there be a next one. Don’t miss it! Benjamin Stevens is the master of our time.
