NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it’s too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.

AN ELLE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore who just wrote the world’s first comprehensive encyclopedia of faeries. She’s learned many of the secrets of the Hidden Ones on her adventures . . . and also from her fellow scholar and former rival Wendell Bambleby.

Because Bambleby is more than infuriatingly charming. He’s an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother and in search of a door back to his realm. And despite Emily’s feelings for Bambleby, she’s not ready to accept his proposal of marriage: Loving one of the Fair Folk comes with secrets and dangers.

She also has a new project to focus on: a map of the realms of faerie. While she is preparing her research, Bambleby lands her in trouble yet again, when assassins sent by his mother invade Cambridge. Now Bambleby and Emily are on another adventure, this time to the picturesque Austrian Alps, where Emily believes they may find the door to Bambleby’s realm and the key to freeing him from his family’s dark plans.

But with new relationships for the prickly Emily to navigate and dangerous Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, Emily must unravel the mysterious workings of faerie doors and of her own heart.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Like all good fairy tales, this book is enchantingly charming, with hints of razor-sharp teeth. My only complaint is that it ends; I want to live in Emily’s Otherlands forever.”—Kiersten White, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Mister Magic

“Readers will be pleased that curmudgeonly Emily hasn’t lost too much of her edge, but she’s still susceptible to unexpected bonds of friendship.”Booklist, starred review

“Upping the danger and the darkness while still retaining all the beauty of the prose, this takes Emily’s story to new heights.”Publishers Weekly

A clever, creative story

I thought these books were going to be lighthearted and somewhat vacuous fantasy but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

These stories don’t move quickly but they pull you along. They’re somehow perfectly academic in feel: dry at moments but inspired and unexpected the next moment.

A flawed sequel still worth reading

I loved the first Emily Wilde book so much that I actually reread it immediately after finishing it. The world-building is so rich and compelling, and even minor characters felt well-rounded and compelling. It’s not without faults, but it’s so brilliantly executed that they scarcely distract.

The second book—Map of the Otherlands—is not as strong as the first. We encounter characters like Rose and Ariadne who seem to lack the spark that made side characters interesting in book 1, even when those characters fell into archetypal roles.

The plot also devolves into macguffin-chasing at times and is a bit less elegantly stitched together, particularly in the first 75% of the book.

The last quarter of the book, however, is worth the wait. With a return to Faerie in which Emily and company must again survive by wits alone, the book finally takes off. The description of this world is yet again equal parts fascinating and disturbing; I only wish we’d been able to spend more time there.

smart and funny

I have absolutely fallen in love with this series!! It's a really fun series so far, well written, and well performed. I love the actor(s) accents, pronunciations, and ability to portray the dry humor. I can't wait for the next one.

It’s unique. I have no idea why I love it.

I cannot tell you why I have loved these two books. On the surface, I would have predicted the very detailed thinking and conversation of the MC Emily would have annoyed me or got boring… but no! I don’t know how author Heather Fawcett is doing it, but it’s entertaining. It’s one of very few books I pre-purchased and then actually pined for 2nd book to come out. I don’t know why I ended up loving it. Sometimes it’s downright hilarious when something really kooky or dangerous happens, because this world does involve magical beings, most of which are dangerous, as much as stodgy college professorial studies. So, oh so proper English manners and unemotional logic are pitted against fantastical stuff. It’s like, seeing a tidy lady beating a dragon with her umbrella more because it’s disturbing the peace than it wants to eat people. I don’t know… that’s the best I can describe my absurd love of this series. It did take me awhile to catch on to the premise and then to enjoy it. I’m so glad I kept on through the first chapters of first book. And I can’t help but love Wendell Bambleby too. He’s his own genius character. He’s perfect foil for Emily. His intelligence is more hidden, his kindness much more hidden, and peculiarity of habits both entertaining and endearing. Performance was very good. I do love a bit more difference between voices, but I could easily tell who was who. The difference between English and Irish accents was so accurate narrator must naturally know them. She did a great job putting inflections in so conversation sounded natural and lively. So that’s a great job. I think we’ve gotten spoiled by some narrators who are possibly freaks of nature with their pitch range.

An amazing sequel to Encyclopaedia of Faeries

I have to say that I loved this book even more than the Encyclopaedia of Faeries: it has the right pace, brings new interesting side characters and folk. I also loved that Poe made a great appearance and contributed a lot to the story. A great sequel indeed!

Enjoyed the characters

I have completed listening to books 1 & 2 one after the other. At first - I wasn’t sure I was going to like the style of this book - but soon you find your moving along as she tells of the journey. I loved all the characters and truly hope there will be a book 3 about Wendall and Emily reclaiming the crown & court.
What would be cute is if you wrote in the back of the story - a little story and Poe’s adventures of meeting the characters that come to his tree. He’s not enough for his own book, but a few pages behind would be perfect, a recipe card for one of Poe’s bread would be fun too!
I hope whomever reads this - has enjoyed the books as much as I did.

Narrator perfectly captured the ‘voice’ of the main character

Love everything about this book, from the concept to the fully realized characters and places. Beautifully rendered by the narrator.

Great escape from this crazy time!

Loved the incredible narration and the vivid landscape descriptions in different fairy worlds.
I did find it a challenge to keep the different fae characteristics straight at times.
What a wonderful way to spend time away from the ugliness in our realms.
Hoping for a third book to continue the enchantment.
