About this listen

A world-renowned authority on the science of alcohol exposes its influence on our health, mood, sleep, emotions, and productivity - and what we can and should do to moderate our intake.

From after-work happy hour to a nightly glass of wine, we're used to thinking of alcohol as a normal part of our daily lives. In Drink?, neuropharmacology professor David Nutt takes a fascinating, science-based look at drinking to unpack why we should reconsider our favorite pastime.

Using cutting-edge scientific research and years of hands-on experience in the field, Nutt delves into the long- and short-term effects of alcohol. He addresses topics such as hormones, mental health, fertility, and addiction, explaining how alcohol travels through our bodies and brains, what happens at each stage of inebriation, and how it effects us even after it leaves our systems. With accessible, easy-to-understand language, Nutt ensures that listeners recognize why alcohol can have such a negative influence on our bodies and our society. In the vein of This Naked Mind, Drink? isn't preachy; it simply gives listeners clear, evidence-based facts to help them make the most informed choices about their consumption.

Good nose, dense legs

As has been mentioned by others, those of us raised measuring alcohol in ounces and minding the BAC .08 instead of milliliters and units are left stumbling during the many examples of quantities of alcohol and its impact on the body. I don't blame the author for this, however, I blame the US's reluctance to join the rest of the world using the metric system. The author reads the audio book, and while quite knowledgeable and seemingly pleasant, he has the disruptive tendency to start sentences in a strong, full voice, and then lose volume until the end of the sentence is nearly a whisper. If you pump up the volume to hear these last drops the sentences blare at the beginning, but if you tone it down the last few words are a mumble. The content is valuable, I just wish I read the text myself and perhaps joined an exchange program in 6th grade so I learned the metric system.

Informative

I didnt expect so much data. The book reads a little dry, like a list of statistics. I guess I expected more of a self-help type of presentation. That being said, it was very educational and interesting. And i enjoyed discovering some surprising facts.

Very Applicable Read.

This is a great book that approaches this issue from a variety of standpoints- scientific, health, societal, and political. The author does a good job of supplying information and supporting it with easy-enough-to-understand science without unnecessary minutiae. He humanizes the issue by bringing his own life experiences into his writing and encourages readers to understand the causes behind their journey in order to create a path forward. I don’t consider myself as any type of severe alcoholic, but this book is still great for self awareness and reflection. Really, its lessons are applicable to more than even just drinking. Not every person with a drinking problem is the bum sleeping on the park bench downtown. This problem is pervasive throughout every tier of our society, all across the world.

very informative

This book has changed my overall view of alcohol in my home. I wouldn’t say that I have a problem with it but it’s definitely not healthy for me. At least I will drink moderately or not at all great book. Thank you.
