About this listen

I am Levy Michaels. Once my kind were the hunters - now we are the hunted.

Supernaturals are out of the closet but I have to stay hidden because of the type of magic I possess. I’m a legacy. It sounds like the title should come with reverence, a trust fund, or at the very least a cool backstory - instead it comes with a death sentence.

I have to hide in plain sight and pretend to be just human. I’m pretty good at it. I live a simple and somewhat normal life, and I work in antique acquisitions. Everything’s going fine until a dangerous and enchanted dagger that was once in my possession is stolen. I didn’t think things could get any worse until I woke up next to a dead shifter, fae, and mage, without any memory of the past 24 hours.

Considered guilty of murder by most of the magical community and humans, I must work with Gareth, the sexy and dangerous leader of the Supernatural Guild. If he’s as good as rumored, it’s only a matter of time until he discovers the truth about me - then being found guilty of murder is the least of my worries.

Worth Sticking With

I found this book a little hard to get into iniatially. The main character to a little much to take. However, I'm glad I stuck with it. Overall, I love the storyline and while I wished some things had happened, I like the way the book ended. I look forward to reading the next book in series.

Good Series Starter

I thought this book did a good job setting the groundwork and introducing the characters for the series. Overall I liked the different types of magical beings and their abilities as well as the world building of how magic is treated in the series. The narrator was great at bringing the story to life. I would like some more background and depth in the side characters but hopefully that will come in book 2. I will be continuing this series and am looking forward to more from this author.

Frustrating

It's frustrating when the main characters doth protest too much but obviously want one thing and do another -when a good guy is available and interested. She can't or won't pick her battles and acts stubborn to the very last to the point of irritating. She's snarky 100% of the time there is no other mode of her personality. It's grating. The story is great and other characters are great but the main character pushes everyone away so there's not much interaction going on there. I find I tune her out because some of her snark is redundant, but most of her reactions and conversations have it. She goes off on her own and could have allies but again, pushes them away to go out on her own and inevitably get her ass kicked since she's flying solo. I'm mid book 2 , most of both books have been repeating story building facts about her world and circumstances to justify her status as single and prickly which is the rest of the time all while trying to save supernaturals, yes that's important but she doesn't stop to think 🤔 I could be dead any day now, maybe living is important. She's been hiding her whole life and is magically weak when she should have been cultivating all her defenses to stay alive. Now that she needs her powers she doesn't know how to use them to the full extent. It's hard to understand and difficult to digest. Getting all invested in the story and having the main character be unlikable is rough!

Not a bad start to a new series.

Narrator is great. Book was just good. Not a bad start to a new series, but not great. Felt like the book was shorter than expected. Could have had a little more character development with the secondary characters.

Creative but Rough

The universe is pretty creative and there are some good ideas that are well executed, but it feels rushed in some places and vague in others. The dialogue is fun and pithy but the descriptions do get a bit repetitive and Olivia's emotional state seems somewhat tumultuous.

OUTSTANDING

I read this book on my kindle earlier this year. i bought it on Audible to re-read it and finish the series. this book made me fall in love with the author McKenzie Hunter. It is so well-written. You fall in love with the main character Levy. everyone thinks Levy is a human. she can't reveal her magic or that she is a legacy. Her kind is thought to be extinct and has a kill on sight order. fake put her in the path of Gareth. he knows there's something off with her, but doesn't know exactly what it is. there is a romance blossoming and I love how the author slowly ignites the romance without stalling it. I love how the main character isn't your typical "whiny" female that is sometimes portrayed in urban fantasy. she is strong enough to do things on her own, but also strong enough to know when to ask someone for help. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I highly recommend
