About this listen

Blending humor and behavioral economics, the New York Times best-selling author of Predictably Irrational delves into the truly illogical world of personal finance to help people better understand why they make bad financial decisions and gives them the knowledge they need to make better ones.

  • Why does paying for things often feel like it causes physical pain?
  • Why does it cost you money to act as your own real estate agent?
  • Why are we comfortable overpaying for something now just because we've overpaid for it before?

In Dollars and Sense, world-renowned economist Dan Ariely answers these intriguing questions and many more as he explains how our irrational behavior often interferes with our best intentions when it comes to managing our finances. Partnering with financial comedian and writer Jeff Kreisler, Ariely takes us deep inside our minds to expose the hidden motivations that are secretly driving our choices about money.

Exploring a wide range of everyday topics - from credit card debt and household budgeting to holiday sales - Ariely and Kreisler demonstrate how our ideas about dollars and cents are often wrong and cost us more than we know. Mixing case studies and anecdotes with tangible advice and lessons, they cut through the unconscious fears and desires driving our worst financial instincts and teach us how to improve our money habits.

Fascinating, engaging, funny, and essential, Dollars and Sense is a sound investment, providing us with the practical tools we need to understand and improve our financial choices, save and spend smarter, and ultimately live better.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, November 2017

I must admit that a personal finance book is not something that would typically make it into my listening queue, but, in my search for a November pick, I was drawn to the cover of Dollars and Sense and then immediately recognized Dan Ariely's name as longtime customer favorite. So I gave the sample a try, and "bam!" I was sold by the narration. Simon Jones' performance captures the wit and wisdom authors Ariely and Kreisler have woven into this very entertaining blend of storytelling and behavioral economics. I'm left much more cognizant of the outer and inner forces that affect how I spend money without feeling overwhelmed (or bored) by the practical things we all can do to be smarter about the financial choices we make. —Tricia, Audible Editor

Best Book on money EVER !

I fully admit, I’m not real smart with money. I’ve tried countless books on understanding and managing money better. They are always pretty darn boring, lack depth and don’t really assist me in my goal of being fiscally healthy.

This book was the opposite. It was interesting, witty, gave in-depth explanations about why I make horrible money decisions and real strategies of how I might be able to make better money decisions.

Thank you to everyone involved in this book for helping be more fiscally healthy.

Not only nutritious, but delicious too.

If all books on personal finance were as wise, sensible, and fun to listen to as this, we'd all be a little less stinky with our money. Really good sentences, here. Flawless performance. Fresh insights on a well-worn topic.

The best book on mind and money.

By far the best book I’ve read on the everyday psychology effects of money and the common mistakes we make.

Very insightful and humorous.

The only thing that would have made it better is if it had been read by Dan Arielly.

Good points

A lot that we already realize, but explains the thinking behind i why we spend the way we do. Offers good tips to save more money. Picked a good narrator to accentuate the subtle sense of humor in the book. Makes dry material enjoyable.

Great book to make you think and laugh

Great book that made me think about my finances and money in general. With real world stories and examples that incoorporated an excellent balance of serious thoughtful insight and laugh out loud humor. I listened to the this audio book at work on earbuds and literally laughed out loud many times. My coworkers may now wonder about my sanity lol ;). Read it then stop and stop and think...that will be funnier after read this book.
