About this listen

This program includes an introduction read by the author.

World-renowned lawyer Alan Dershowitz recounts stories from his many years of defending the state of Israel.

Alan Dershowitz has spent years advocating for his "most challenging client" - the state of Israel - both publicly and in private meetings with high-level international figures, including every US president and Israeli leader of the past 40 years. Replete with personal insights and unreported details, Defending Israel offers a comprehensive history of modern Israel from the perspective of one of the country's most important supporters. Listeners are given a rare front-row seat to the high-profile controversies and debates that Dershowitz was involved in over the years, even as the political tides shifted and the liberal community became increasingly critical of Israeli policies.

Beyond documenting America's changing attitude toward the country, Defending Israel serves as an updated defense of the Jewish homeland on numerous points - though it also includes Dershowitz's criticisms of Israeli decisions and policies that he believes to be unwise. At a time when Jewish Americans as a whole are increasingly uncertain as to who supports Israel and who doesn't, there is no better audiobook to turn to for answers - and a pragmatic look toward the future.

Excellent!

Extremely interesting story of an ultra-intelligent defender of Israel. He is sometimes critical, but always consistent. I wish he had narrated the whole thing himself though.

Needed Education

This book should be read and discussed on every college campus. Book clubs should read and discuss. People do not know Israel and that needs to change. Written in an easy to understand style. Like a conversation with a smart friend.

Very enjoyable and informative.

I really enjoyed this book. I’m not what your ordinary call a fan of Mr Dershowitz but this book was fascinating. I hadn’t realized that he has been in the tranches in the defense of the state of Israel for a very long time. He has been consistent and constant. This book also opens a window into some of his other works on the subject. I can’t wait to read them all and hope that all of them come to an audio format for east listening.

Worst propaganda i have ever read in my life!

Alan Dershowitz is an agent of Israel portraying him self as some heroic figure when it was revealed during the Epstein case that Alan also had received under age massages and tried to silence his and Jeffrey's Victims twice!!! First Alan filed paper work to dox intimidate and silence under age rape victims, then had Mike Cernovich file the same paperwork. wow what a scum bag! Also Alan defended the Israeli Spy Johnathan Pollard who stole the most US TOP SECRET DOCUMENTS in history.

Fiction, lies, and anecdotes

The strongest parts of this book are the personal anecdotes that Dershowitz shares, as it (perhaps unwittingly) shows how it is that he arrived at the place he is intellectually. The remainder of the book involves uncritical parroting of contemporary Israeli propaganda and self-aggrandizement. Dershowitz is not a lawyer for the concept of the nation of Israel, he just feels like he is (as he himself admits). The fact that he feels the need to advocate for it to exist in specifically the form of a Jewish national state, with all the discrimination and "demographic manipulation" that implies, has dark implications that he writes off as patently absurd. He denies past atrocities while pointing to their results as justification for future atrocities, and now the hundreds of civilians dying in Gaza on a weekly basis are a bloody and damning testament to that. Dershowitz scoffs at the idea that Israel could have committed a genocide, then strawmans or ignores the details of those allegations. I came here looking for a solid defense of Israel against the astonishingly damning evidence I have seen these past months, and Dershowitz's case is watery and loose.

“The point is that we are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield.”
― George Orwell
