About this listen

One man. One ghost. The fate of our world.

When Rohan finds that a betrayal and near-death experience leave him with mysterious powers, it’s up to him to stop a man with dark magic from opening a portal to the dead.

His only help is in the form of a ghost who doesn’t remember who she is or why she’s there.

Will this odd duo of the spiritual and magical realms be enough to save the world?

Death Marked is about love, loss, and learning!

Death Marked is about a man experiencing love, loss, learning while growing from a small egocentric perspective to a but moved to a planetary one! I completely empathized with the protagonist and his struggle with accepting the loss of a loved one . That inability had extreme far reaching consequences that constantly surprised me in this book leaving me never knowing what would happen next! In the end you have an attempt to thwart the natural order leading to dire consequences of extinction level proportions making for a great read! I loved this book!

Death Marked (Modern Necromancy #1) by Justin Sloa

I was gifted this audio ARC from the author for a honest and unbiased review.
This is one of the best books I've listened to. There was never a dull moment.
This is a great Halloween read. The characters Rohan meet up with whilst wanting to bring his beloved back, are as eerie as the environment around him. But he will do anything to bring her back to life. I really felt for him. This is a great Urban Fantasy.
Michael La Ronn was fantastic through the the book.
You'll have to spare some time out for this book, it will consume you.

Action Packed!

Where does Death Marked rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

You want me to rank my children. LOL? I've been privileged to listen to a lot of amazing books. My preference is for longer books--either complicated world systems, or books describing generations of families (a la Ken Follett). I liked this book and would place it squarely in the middle.

What did you like best about this story?

I found the plot/premise to be very interesting. The horror aspects were well written and I was successfully creeped out!

Have you listened to any of Michael Tamburrino’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I believe this is the first book I've listened to that is narrated by Michael Tamburrino. His voice characterization was amazing. Each character was given life and personality in a unique way.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found the horror aspects of the story to be, well, horrifying. Usually zombies make me laugh (I know, I'm not normal) but the ones in this book aren't comical...they're scary.

Any additional comments?

The book started off a little slow for me--I had neglected to read any blurb about the book so I kept wondering what this book was about. So, I put the book aside a few times in order to listen to other books. I regret that I did so. The only reason I mention this is to assure anyone who encounters the same issue to just hang in there because once the action starts it is a whirlwind! I really enjoyed the book and look forward to any others in the series.

An enjoyable story of love and loss.

how far would you go to get back the love of your life? If you said "I'd do anything" would that include (with no training) a commando raid against a vastly superior force? In the mountains? the Ural mountains? would you resort to necromancy? would you be able to remain true to yourself through all this? Buckle up, the ride gets bumpy from here.

Not quite there for me.

Any additional comments?

I'm generally a fan of urban fantasy, books but this one didn't quite work for me. I found the book to be confusing, didn't feel as if there was an adequate explanation of how magic worked within the world I honestly felt as if the author had this awesome story in his head and yet in the process of getting out of his head and on to paper, parts of it got left behind. I'm sure he understood how everything worked and went together, but as a reader I just felt lost part of the time. It was an interesting concept but the execution didn't quite work for me. This is the first book by Sloan I've read and I'm sure it won't be my last, but I'm not certain if I'll continue on with this series or not.
