Do you fancy a little Necromancy?

I enjoy Urban Fantasy a lot, and can run through a list of names starting with Harry Dresden and finishing with Yancy Lazarus, but I can without question state that I have a new hero to add to my list, Rohan Evans. Evans is a stage mage, meaning he does tricks and not real magic, but when the perosn dearest to him dies he kind of loses his mind and is willing to do whatever it takes to get her back. It is the attempt to revive his love life that instead kick starts his necromantic powers and leads him into a whole new world of magic, darkness, and death.

Slaon and Ronn create a complex and deep Character in Rohan. You genuinely feel his loss and his need for this beloved fiancé, Senna. The story itself is full of twists, turns, and loop de'loops with nothing being as it seems. I appreciate that we get to see Evans transition from a stage magician into a necromancer. Usually, we get the hero already established as a mage of some type when they first appear. This was genuinely fun getting to see him go through all the hoops. Then, since this is the boxed set, we get to see his progression and his cirle of allies grow. I think this is the best part of the series, getting to develop with the character. I love when a book does that. All I can tell you is that the big bads a re sufficiently dark and ominous and the stakes escalate as we move ahead. I will not tell you what Senna's final fate is, that is up to you to discover.

Michael Tamburrino narrates the series, and he does an ecellent job. I think his style suited Rohan's nature, and he played the evil characters like he's had some experience being bad. Tamburrino's voice is pleasant, and seemed to have no problem doing the various accents and voices for the other characters. I also enjoyed the cover for the boxed set, it manages to let you know that it deals with spirits, and the art is painted by a pro. It doesn't come off like a child did the work.

This is a fun series that builds up speed as it goes a long. You get to see the hero develop and grow, and become comfortable with his powers even as he struggles to survive. After finishing this I really hope that there will be more books about Rohan in the future a this series to too good to die. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Not very good

The story was very poorly written. Character development was almost nonexistent, and the narrator inflection on many of the words really put me off. All and all a very poor read. This is sad as I had very high hopes.
