About this listen

Over a year has passed since the Uprising, and the Smoky Mountains are slowly healing from the zombie outbreak that threatened the entire world. Buford and Rue begin their new lives protecting their beloved home, while Buford balances his duties between being a park ranger and training a new generation of Red Tunic initiates. Buford and Dolly get married and set off on a turbulent honeymoon. Things are looking up for Rue as he settles into his new role as the Townsend chief of police, until an old enemy returns to settle a score with the Forrester clan.

Gallow, the Rougarou Alpha, has established an alliance with the Spawned Leader, Janusz, and the long-awaited world invasion known as the Culling is in the final planning stages. However, Gallow has a nefarious plan for revenge against the citizens of Stillwater before he enslaves the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Mad Dog travels to the White House to have his Navy Cross upgraded to the Medal of Honor. What could possibly go wrong?

While the world teeters on the precipice of a devastating war, Hunter’s degenerative condition worsens, and time is running out. Rachael leads an expedition to the Himalayas to retrieve a critical element that may lead to a cure. The stakes are higher than ever as Buford and Rue prepare for a war against the deadliest of enemies. They’ll need all the help they can get, but will it be enough?

Genre bending at its finest!

Another great installment for theWiild-eyed Southern Boys series!
it doesn't really matter what you're into, this story has something for you. thrills, suspense, comedy, science fiction, Bigfoot... Elvis!!!...

I could go on and on about the different elements, but the most important element is the story. The depth of the story and the depth of the characters really hooks you in from the beginning and it just keeps getting deeper.

Weeeeell, Doggies, The Black Rose has thorns

Here we are again. Another novel by the Black Rose, narrated by the villainous Vernon, and this book floored me. Hell, it didn't just floor me. It measured the floor, put down the subfloor, laid the carpet strips, installed the carpet, cut it to fit, and secured the seams with me in the middle of the room under all that stuff. Thankfully, Rose cut out a mouth space for me to try to catch my breath, but there isn't enough oxygen in the room to keep up. The book is like the end of the Eiger Sanction, with Clint Eastwood hanging by a thread, reaching out for a man he know killed his friend. Its precarious, dangerous, serious, and wrought with tension as events conspire to takeout our intrepid heroes.

I wisely forewent, is that a word, my bucket of extra crispy and just sat back with a bottle of Mountain Dew Voltage, turned out the lights, and listened in the dark. The effect was like having Freddy Kruger tickle my neck hairs with his finger blades as they stood up. I won't lie, it took me more than one day to get through this, but not because I didn't want to. The book is over 14hours long, and I have kids to feed. Plus sleep, but I did that minimally. I had to get through it as quickly as possible. I wish I could listen at double speed, but who the hell can do that and enjoy a book?!?! Not this cat. I prefer to savor the subtle and dulcet tones of Mr. Vernon, not jam words into my ears like a runaway freight train. That's like listening to Ska music. And there is no rushing Vernon's narration. Like Orson Welles used to say, "Steve Vernon will tell his tales his own way, and there is no rushing perfection." I remember him saying that a lot before he died. If he didn't, he would have; of that I'm positive. Kinda like those old E.F. Hutton Commercials, "When Steve Vernon Speaks everyone else shuts the hell up and listens because he's like a mariner's siren, compelling us to listen." Man, commercials were weird back in the day. They were really long winded too.

I didn't even have to suck on a Jolly Rancher to get a sugar high, this book is filled to the brim with adrenaline and testosterone. It's like viagra for the brain! Not that I know what viagra is like. Just sayin'. This book is a combination of Christmas for the mystery of the unknown, and is such a gift; while balancing firmly in the realm of Halloween. Chills, terrors, and mutilations (like you didn't have mutilations on Halloween when YOU were a kid) abound. But it's all in good gorey fun in the same vein as Dog Soldiers if there were Sasquatch and zombies and such.

I went into this already hooked, and Rose dug that even deeper into my gums with this story. He's crafted a highly detailed world of darkness, with scattered rays of light (hope). In other words the world building is spectacular, but leaves you feeling as if a singular piece is pulled away our heroes will die horribly. Then again, they still might even if everything goes perfectly. The book has pacing, characters with depth, peril, and lots of action. Plus monsters. You can't forget the monsters.

Vernon puts his brand on this bad dog, like cattle rancher with palsy, its all over the place (but in a good way, not like the Circle O bought the same cow 27 times). He really digs the story, you can tell by how much gravitas he sinks into it. If he doesn't like it then I am even more impressed! You'd never know, but it's clear he loves this series, world and characters. Plus he gets to play a bigfoot, among other monsters!

Why aren't you reading this series? Did you lock your doors and windows? Are you hiding under the bed? You better if you read this series. Get it now. Operators are standing by.

Good story with a good narrator!

I started on the third book and now have to go back and listen to books 1 and 2. The story and characters drew me in and left me eager to go back and start at the beginning. There is truly something for everyone no matter what genre you are looking for. Good job Richard R. Rose and Stephen L Vernon!

Yes

I was sad and then I listened to the book and then I was happy. This was good and it was not bad. The book has lots of words lined up in a way that is good and so it tells a story that I liked to listen to a lot. I would read it again but I still remember it so I won't. I will wait untill I don't remember what happens in the book or someone tells me how to not remember so that I can read it again.

Keep them coming

The next installment in a series that has easily become one of my top series. The world knows, knows what well if you are this far into the series you should know. However, there are things the world learns in this one and there is no way that they should have to. I have no clue how Rose keeps adding more and more creatures, alliances, and characters and keeps them so intertwined and interesting. Then you throw in Stephen's narration and you will not regret diving into this series. I would say if you like Mark Tufo's books, horror comedies mashups then this is the series for you!

I love this series!!!

Once again, the Boyz are back in another hair-raising adventure and the stakes have never been higher! Old and new enemies are out to destroy the world as we know it! The narration is second to none and I’m dying to see what book 4 has in store for me! So freaking awesome! Highly recommend!

good book

this is a good book in a series. unfortunately the author will get nasty if the review is not up to his standards. I'd be interested to see where the story goes next.
