Publisher's summary

Welcome to the city of Angelthene. We hope you survive.

Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow.

Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person's aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return. Loren will do whatever it takes to get her friend back—even if it means accepting help from Darien Cassel, the leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslaying circle in the city.

Darien specializes in tracking down demons and criminals that are better off dead than alive, so when he takes a job to track down Loren and finds out she is human—and couldn't hurt a fly if her life depended on it—he decides to protect her instead of turn her in for a reward. As much as Loren doesn't want to admit it, Darien is her best and only chance at finding her friend alive, if she can somehow manage to get along with him—and not fall head-over-heels in love with him in the process, which is far easier said than done.

When more women start disappearing, and some of them slowly turn up dead, Loren and Darien's search for answers takes them deep into Angelthene's corrupt underbelly, where they discover a dark secret that threatens to unravel their world. And when tragedy strikes, Loren learns that love can make an ordinary person do extraordinary things.

From the author of Dreams of Ice and Iron comes a new fantasy romance perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas, Ilona Andrews, and Cassandra Clare.

LOVE THIS STORY

I love the characters and the plot, great story line. Only complaint is the male voice actor isn’t what I imagined. I don’t mind the pace of the narration, but I felt like the male should’ve had a darker voice.

Favorite series

I’m so happy this book is on audio now! This is my all time favorite book, Darien and Loren are the best. This is urban fantasy with lots of twists and turns and a unique magic system. Obsessed and everyone needs to read and/or listen!

Narration has to be sped up to tolerate it

I have been anticipating listening to this book but it took a few days to actually get it at a speed that I could tolerate. I like the story line but the narration is not good. This story may be better to read than to listen to.
Dissapointed.

Interesting story. Waste of narration.

Should’ve been duet narration or just the female to narrate the whole book. It’s confusing when every chapter is their own impersonation of the others’ voices. Not sure I’ll continue with the next book. Didn’t really grab me the way I’d hoped.

It was an interesting ride.

I liked the premise of this book but it was definitely a rollercoaster. As a spicy romantasy girly I would have like a little more tension and spice throughout, but that’s ok. I didn’t particularly love the male narrator just because of his cadence to every sentence, but again, it was ok. There was definitely a lot going on in this book but without deeper understanding, you had to do a lot of inferencing. Overall I liked it and will read and listen to the next book.

Excellent book and narration!

I loved this! While I started getting frustrated by some of the MFC and MMC actions at times, the author didn’t drag them out to the point of being exhausting. Great writing, great main characters.

Audio version a little different than book.

This is actually my second review of this. I preventively was a little harsh in my original review before I even finished the book bc the first couple chapters were leaving sentences out but it got a lot better throughout the book. Either that or I just quit noticing it bc the story was actually so good. 😭🥰 I actually ended up adding it to my 6 star reads on Goodreads bc I loved it so much!

Huge miss

Why couldn’t this book have been a duet style read!? The guy doing the girl voices kept pulling me out of the story and the girl sounds like she’s in her 40s not 20s. I really hope for future books that they change the style. I couldn’t get full invested in this very hyped book due to the voice actors. The storyline however was really cool I did preorder the next book. But I am praying the step up the game on the voice acting and audible performance.
