Story
When police chief Nathan Slaughter settles in the tiny mountain community of Potter’s Field, Wyoming, his most fervent prayer is that he has left behind him forever the nightmare he barely survived on a blizzardy night in Detroit. But nothing prepares him for the greater sanity-threatening nightmare he is about to confront. Beginning with the discovery of mutilated cattle on outlying ranches, Slaughter is drawn deeper and deeper into a vortex of terror as animals become savage and children go insane, trapping the entire town in a frenzy of violence. As Slaughter races against time to expose the horrifying secret behind the increasingly savage attacks, he also struggles to overcome his deepest fears.

It was inescapably chilling, as if the murderer was methodically working his way down a page torn from the phone book. The three victims brutally killed in their own homes had one thing in common: They were all listed as M. Douglas. The fact that Mara Douglas is next on the list has her jumping at shadows, until FBI agent Aidan Shields shows up to make sure she doesn't become the fourth victim.

Disappointed in Narration
I adore the Joe Grey mysteries; however this installment and the previous had a different narrator. William Dufris is horrible when it comes to this series, the mispronunciation of words was irritating, along with his character voices! I rushed through the book as quickly as I could, just to finish and move on so I could listen once again to Susan Boyce’s wonderful narration. The story was good, but the narrator was very disappointing! Please never use him again for this series!

Joe Grey is back
Joe Grey, Dulcie, and Kit are joined by the three ferals to help rescue Dulcie's beloved Wilma after she is kidnapped. In addition, Joe is obssessed with the three murders of women in their homes. Is there a serial killer lose in Medina Point?
This book is about halfway in the series.
The voice of Joe isn't exactly what I imagined for a rough tough tomcat but I got use to it. The other voices are quite good and the reader does catch Joe's impatience and slight arrogance.
A welcome addition to Audible's collection, I hope the others in the series will soon join it.

This one was a blast!
A good and fun story. I look forward to the next book.
I don't think SRM knows that portion of California very well because it takes more than 2 hours to drive from SF to Gilroy because of terrible terrible traffic .

I Don't Like the New Narrator
I love the stories. I don't like the new narrator. He mispronounces Spanish words like a chorizo (it's a hard ch not a k). Then there are those stereotypical accents he gave Roman and the other folk who are Hispanic. Finally, Joe sounds sooooo arrogant that I can't stand him.

Bring Back Susan Boyce!
Cat Pay the Devil is a great installment in the Joe Grey series . . . but I, like many other listeners, can hardly abide William Dufris as the narrator :( Oh my . . . While Susan Boyce does a bang up job on all the Joe Grey books, I can't say the say for this performance. BUT I wasn't willing to miss the story. Wilma is kidnapped by an escaped convict . . . and the cats have their work cut out for them to find her and set her free . . . Joe, Dulcie and Kit are joined by feral talking cats, Cotton, Willow and Coyote, who witnessed the kidnapping. Many years earlier Wilma, a retired prison officer knew the escaped convict, Cage Jones, and now he was back and he had her. Great story . . . bad narration.

Good story
I enjoyed the story; however, the narrator made the women and cats sound like whining children at times. I found that irritating.

Gripping story
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I just wish they stayed with the original narrator. This one is ssssooo bad. He doesn’t have the range the original narrator, Susan Boyce, has. His female characters - whether human or feline - come across as caricatures and whiney. Truly does a disservice to the story.
