About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a novel of redemption and suspense, as a woman haunted by the unsolved murder of her childhood friend returns to her small South Carolina hometown....

Tory Bodeen grew up in a run-down house where her father ruled with an iron fist and a leather belt - and where her dreams and talents had no room to flourish. Her one escape was her neighbor Hope, who lived in the big house just a short skip away, and whose friendship allowed Tory to be something she wasn’t allowed to be at home: a child.

Then Hope was brutally murdered, and everything fell apart.

Now, as she returns to Progress with plans to settle in and open a stylish home-design shop, Tory is determined to find a measure of peace and free herself from the haunting visions of the past. As she forges a new bond with Cade Lavelle - Hope’s older brother and the heir to the family fortune - she isn’t sure whether the tragic loss they share will unite them or drive them apart. But she is willing to open her heart, just a little, and try.

But living so close to those unhappy memories will be more difficult and frightening than Tory could ever have expected. Because Hope’s murderer is nearby as well....

“Roberts may have achieved her personal best in this tense Southern Gothic. As atmospheric and unsettling as a Tennessee Williams play.... This is romantic drama at its best.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

I really loved this story. It is definitely one of my favorites. Great twists and turns. The narrator was a woman, even though it says Dean Robertson. The narrator was a little speedy for me, but overall decent.

Surprisingly great story

I loved the name Tori Bodeen and the voice of the narrator for this story so that was a good start, and most of all I like that it steered you one direction until you you just cruising along thinking it was all going to turn out as expected and then took a sharp turn in a different direction at the end.

Good book with an unexpected twist at the end

strong story, keeps you listening and wanting more.

narrator is OK, not bad, just doesn't really separate the characters voices.

good story

I absolutely love Nora Roberts and this one did not disappoint! However, the narration was incredibly disappointing. I've listened to 38 books in the past year and this is the first time to almost delete a book due to narration. No inflection at all! I will definitely pay attention in the future to who is narrating!

Fabulous book! Horrible narration....

Who interviews these narrator's?! She reads through parts very fast, some characters have the same voice so it's hard to know who is saying what. It's a shame because the book is fantastic.

needs a different narrator

Main character of Torey’s voice appeared that of a older person versus the story’s real character.

Main character

This is typical Nora, which is a good thing. Poor, abused girl grows up and moves back to her hometown and hooks up reluctantly with rich guy. There are murders and 'the sight,' so I enjoyed all this just fine. But the reader just reads! All the characters sound the same!! I can hardly tell when speakers change. Who made this casting decision? Terrible.

Good Story but Bad Reader

I always like Nora Roberts and the story was interesting and a little fun. However I couldn't tell one voice from another...all characters sounded the same.

Good story, not happy with Dean's performance
