About this listen

An Astra Militarum Novel

When the Imperial shrine world of Kathur is blighted by Chaos, the brave Guardsmen of Cadia are sent to reclaim it. Yet, they cannot imagine what lies ahead...

Listen to it because....

Aaron Dembski-Bowden's first novel, Cadian Blood is a Black Library classic, pitting a force of plucky Guardsmen from Cadia against a zombie apocalypse.

The story:

When the Imperial shrine world of Kathur is blighted by Chaos, the brave Guardsmen of Cadia are sent to reclaim it. The plague of Nurgle has set in deeply on the planet, forcing the Cadians into battle with an innumerable legion of the infected. In the midst of battle, Captain Parmenion Thade is thrust into an unlikely commanding role. Yet he cannot imagine what lies ahead on Kathur, and just how important it will be to ensure victory there.

A little simplistic, throwback to the old books

I would have liked a little more meat on the bones for this book. Introducing interesting characters just to kill them off is annoying. Telling me that certain characters die in the future is annoying, and using big named bad guys who can’t possibly fail in a meaningful way because they are cornerstones of the lore is a strange choice. The twist at the end was delightful, but it was juxtaposed with what was basically a straight line of a story.

What A IG Novel Should Feel Like

Overwhelming odds, insane Leadership decisions, Space Marines are there and sufficiently awesome, but do not steal the spotlight. Nurgle is always a fun antagonist, and I liked how Typhus was there as a looming threat. It may sound stupid, but the wins of the Guard felt earned - that is how humanity in 40k can overcome the awful threats from everywhere. Dogged determination and simply having more bodies to throw at a problem then the enemy.

Very enjoyable story, competent narration, BUT...

whoever was responsible for the table of contents dorked it up big-time. If it was a human entering the chapter titles - that human has no earthly idea about WH40K or its lore. if it was a speech recognition engine - then the engine blows & whoever QA'd the output was totally asleep at the switch. chapter titles included such classics as "For Home and the Thrown" (sic). I'm going to go out on a limb and say that that wasn't the kind of "throne" ADB was getting at.... BUT...
then again, at least there WAS a table of contents, even if only the short bus version. Too many other 40K books have nothing but chapter #'s listed out in the ToC, especially the short story compilations. C'mon GW, cool it with the JV product support. I'm giving you $65 for an Abaddon miniature made from $3 worth of materials... I KNOW you can afford a Table of Contents... yeesh... (this is all said with much love btw)

Great ending!

Never was into guard books till now. Great story & performance. This had a great pace and a gritty feel to war.

A fun if slightly disjointed ride

The action was great, and the performance for the voices was fantastic. My only slight gripe was that I thought there were a few too many plot threads that didn't seem to amount to anything. I wish we could've spent more time with just the Cadians.

the interactions between the characters were rich and fullfilling. they stole every scene and carries this book.

it jumps around perspectives or pov within the same chapter. Made some scenes a bit uard to follow tbh. otherwise a solid story

ABD & Geary Deliver Big TIme

Cadians against the odds in a Nurgle apocalypse, Captain Thade being an absolute legend, Death Guard and Raven Guard drama. What's not to love? "Shut up Tan" <3

DAMN A.D.B. BACK AT IT AGAIN FOR THE FANS

I found the story engrossing and enjoyable. The intrigue and drama always get me. Love when 40k fiction includes a cross section of the human condition.
