About this listen

A steampunk retelling of Cinderella.

Emmeline O'Shea has been an outspoken advocate for the shape-shifter community, which has come under unjust attack from a political body known as the PSRC (Predatory Shifter Regulations Committee), and her robust efforts have landed her a prestigious position as the spokesperson for the International Shifter Rights Organization. She has been selected to give the final address in Scotland before they vote on legislation that will grant protective rights to the shifter community. Because she is fundamentally changing the laws, she is also receiving death threats.

Oliver Reed is a by-the-book detective-inspector who has dealt with Emme's borderline illegal activism in the past, and there is little love lost between the two. When his superior tasks Oliver with guarding Emme around-the-clock to keep her safe until the summit is over, he is frustrated. He has several open cases requiring his attention, and his spare time is occupied with chasing down leads about the whereabouts of his brother, a rogue vampire bent on causing trouble in Scotland.

When their airship is hijacked, Emme and Oliver are forced to parachute away before they exit British soil. They take refuge in Emme's family's hunting lodge where Oliver is introduced to her abusive stepsisters.

Together the pair must make their way to Edinburgh so as not to miss the summit meeting where Emme will be key in helping to pass legislation that will disband the corrupt PSRC. But between her vindictive sisters and Oliver's rogue vampire brother, they face danger at every turn, not to mention dealing with their growing attraction for each other.

When Emme is kidnapped - leaving behind only one shoe as evidence - Oliver must find her before it’s too late - and the summit ends at midnight.

Good conclusion

This was a good finish to the series. I was worried that I'd be saddled with a selfish, pushy protagonist the whole time, but I actually really liked Emmie! Emmie is goodhearted and determined. She uses her privilege to fight for the rights of oppressed shapeshifters. The novel gave the rest of the gang from the series appearances, so that was nice for a concluding book. I'd like a short story (or longer) about Emmie's stepsister Madeline; I want to know more about her secret and what it looks like.

Would recommend this whole series to others.

I liked this series but the ending is quick and several questions remain unanswered

I enjoyed this series but liked the first book best. They all leave unanswered questions at the end like the author was hurried to finish. On this book, what happened to the other twin? One twin is told about but the other is still out there hanging in the wind. The narrator has an irritating lilt at the end of most sentences. The narrator of the first book Saskia Maarleveld was excellent!!

Cindrelly.

This book and the first are my favorite of the series. While this is the last book on Audible for this series, I feel there will be more coming in the future. I’m thinking Madeline and Crow are the next couple. This series is full of clean steampunk romances. Good but not great, and since Audible gave them away a Prime Membership benefit, I was happy to listen. Narrator does a good job.

Keeps you on your toes!

Holy moly, that was fantastic. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. Once you finish it, you’ll know what I mean. Oliver and Emmy were perfect, they fit together when they were battling and they fit together when they weren’t. I like that we were given insight into all of all of the previous characters in the series. I hope there’s a spinoff of some of the characters we have met. It would be fun to continue this journey.

my favorite yet! outstanding and delightful

I do believe this series just gets better and better! I don't want to give spoilers, which is difficult because my heart just wants to sing the praises of certain chapters and characters. What I will say is, if you enjoy retold fairytales, this is an engaging one. If you enjoy this series, this is my favorite so far (which is unexpected, because I loved Isla's story so much), bringing in old familiar friends and hinting at an exciting next installment, for which I cannot wait! Emmie is a most worthy Cinderella, her prince is everything most prince charmings fail to be, and the fairy godmother moment, well, I cannot put to words how much I utterly adored it! I won't give spoilers, but I must say, I love Gus.

Absolutely worth the credit. Buy it, listen to it, love it.
