About this listen

Build a healthy, supportive relationship with your loved one living with BPD.

How would you feel if you weren’t able to think beyond black-and-white thinking? What if your sense of self depends on what you believe others want from you? What if you struggled with relating to things in the present because the past rooted there? What if your future is too overwhelming to think about? What if you didn’t trust yourself to be alone because you just weren’t sure you were safe with you?

If you can understand any of these, you might have a small idea of what it’s like to live with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

BPD is a misunderstood and often misdiagnosed condition, and for those who love a person with BPD, it can be truly heartbreaking. This book isn’t just to shatter the common misconceptions about BPD, but to give friends or family members hope that it can be manageable with the right guidance. In this book, we’ll focus on:

  • Understanding BPD from signs/symptoms to diagnosis
  • Knowing the difference between BPD and other personality disorders
  • Treatment plans, including how loved ones can play a role
  • Suggestions for supporters who love someone with BPD
  • What loved ones with BPD want us to know
  • Tips on helping the person with BPD with forward-thinking
  • How can we best advocate for those with BPD

If you’ve chosen this book, you already know from experience the nitty gritty of how borderline personality disorder looks, and feels. We’re here to help you understand the condition at a deeper level, see it through the eyes of the sufferer, and help you to help them in the most loving and empowering way.

The most important thing we hope you’ll take away with you is that as scary as things may seem at times right now, it won’t always be that way. BPD is only a small part of who your loved one is, and they should never feel defined by it.

And we’ll show you how to guide them to that mindset.

Very Informative and Insightful!

I have a friend who was diagnosed with BPD and this book has helped me a lot to understand what she goes through. I only wish I had read it sooner. This book is an excellent resource. And it is very educational. Ms. Linda Hill describes what a person who suffers with BPD goes through. The book is well written and very easy to understand. I now feel better prepared to help my friend who has BPD.

I liked when Hill discussed in Chapter 1 how BPD is sometimes misdiagnosed by clinicians. After reading this book I am filled with hope for my friend who is struggling with BPD.

I especially liked Chapter 4 where I learned how to help my friend without enabling her. And in Chapter 5 I discovered how to be a strong advocate for a sufferer. I also liked the voice of the narrator Vicky David. It was pleasant and soothing to listen to.

Very interesting

Borderline Personality Disorder is a great audiobook by Linda Hill. I really learned a lot about Borderline Personality Disorder. I have to admit I knew nothing about the subject before listening. I didn’t even know exactly what the disorder is before listening. It was really nice to hear all the information. There is a lot of great information in the audiobook. At the start of each chapter a quote is shared. I don’t remember who shared the quote but it was in chapter 2. The quote was “A small crack doesn’t mean you are broken.” I really liked that quote. The audiobook is really helpful a easy to listen to.

An Honest and Empathetic View of BPD

I really appreciated the following points especially:
"One way to look at it from the sufferer's point of view is by thinking of it as having nerve endings that are constantly exposed and vulnerable."
"Misunderstanding the difference between mood disorders and personality disorders" (I was guilty of this)
"Life for them is emotionally painful, like living with untreated burns."

This is an incredibly helpful guide if you have a loved one with BPD or just want to learn more about the topic. Not only did I not know much going in, but I realized afterward what I did "know" was incorrect. I have people in my family with mental health issues. This is a really impressive and comprehensive guide that gives you straightforward advice on how to help loved ones—and really importantly, something that a lot of people forget: how to help ourselves through it. It's so easy to get absolutely lost and overwhelmed when you're trying to help someone you love, and it's so helpful to have advice about the best ways to help from someone who has the experience of borderline personality disorder. I wish I had heard this book long ago.

Brings hope to those trying to help

This book is a quick read with general and practical guidance for family and friends without medical knowledge. It is not exhaustive of BPD info, but picks out what is generally relevant all with an encouraging tone of hope. As I read and felt the feelings of exhaustion while they described what all the supportive people needs to do and be, the author took care in acknowledging the difficulty of dealing with BPD of a loved one, and it takes a community to be helpful, though the illness is very personal and isolating.

Hits just right. So good.

The book: Borderline Personality Disorder by Dr. Linda Hill is such an accurate and comprehensive resource for people who suffer from BPD. The book provides an overview of the diagnosis and treatment of BPD along with case studies from real life individuals who have experienced the disorder firsthand. It also includes helpful tips for coping with BPD including exercises and self-help strategies.

While I simply downloaded this book out of curiousity, I learned that people with BPD often struggle with self-image and identity. They may feel like they can never be good enough or that they constantly need to prove themselves to others.

I'd say that this book is amazing! I listened it in one day because I couldn't put it down. It's well narrated and has great insights into Borderline Personality Disorder. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this condition or who is struggling with someone who has BPD.

Incredible Resource For Those Seeking Answers

In my own life, due to unavoidable circumstances, I've found myself having to attune into the hidden inner worlds of those suffering with split self-relationships and valuation of worth from turbulent households or particularly violent domestic relationships. I myself have gone through deep trials and confusion in having been able to perceive what was seeming to me like BPD or at least a comorbidity, but felt hesitant in introducing the conversations without a sense of forcing after past repeated denials, romanticizing of abuse, and disproportionate outbursts of rage in which I felt like an emotional punching bag for the past sins of others. I read this as both survivor and advocate. What Linda provides throughout the chapters - from the first identifying steps to initiate a BPD journey for diagnosis & treatment, the four 'types' of the condition and how they're behaviorally expressed, WHY they express how they express, how to remind the sufferer while working on this they're worthy & that there are heightened positive traits such as deep empathy and attunement with the inner sufferings/motivations of others, which can be tapped into and rechanneled for holistic, integrative purposes - is very digestible for the lay reader, as I found myself jotting down notes from every sub-section and following along rather easily. I would recommend this text for those who wish to compassionately understand themselves and others, and it would be helpful for those who have navigated, are navigating, or know someone who is navigating Bipolar Disorder — because though they might express similarly, Linda outlines that mistakes in diagnosis might harm more than it helps, since BD is a mood disorder, whereas BPD is personality. Enjoyed it a lot and am grateful for the opportunity to have reflected on my past actions/inactions as an advocate, and to understand that this is lovingly one day at a time, and that's perfectly fine.
