About this listen

Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims' graves in remote Dread's Hand, Alaska.

It's not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest.

But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what's in the woods from coming out. He finds no closure because no one can explain exactly what happened to Danny.

And the more he searches for answers, the more he finds himself becoming part of the mystery...

"An elegant, twisted, gripping slow-burn of a novel that burrows under the skin and nestles deep.” (RT Book Reviews, Top Pick)

Nicely told

This is a really interesting use of the twin trope, and just a good story overall. The only thing that bugged me was one line, where Paul wonders if the villagers would burn him alive, like Christopher Lee in that old movie. It’s a nice Wicker Man reference… BUT… Christopher Lee’s character LED the villagers in that movie; another guy got burned alive. It’s nitpicky, I know, but it’s an easy enough thing to get right.

Bone White

I recently discovered this author and am enjoying his work. This book did not disappoint, but could be a bit hard to follow. I found myself re-listening in several places to catch what I missed. all in all a good read with a few surprising twists and an open ending. Book 2, perhaps? or maybe there already is a 2 and I just haven't found it yet!!

Cannot stick a landing

4th Malfi book I've read; pretty good writer but his endings are just poorly done.

audio errors

story was very good, narration was very good....but audio was poor. there are several "skips", without the paper version it's hard to tell if it's 1 sentence or multiple paragraphs but there are definitely things missing. also during last chapter there are a few times where there are odd background noises as if something happened in the recording studio.

Creepy Take on True Evil and Mental Illness

I first got turned on to the work of Ronald Malfi through Cemetary Dance when I bought his coming-of-age novel "December Park." I have loved the genre since reading Stephen King's "It" and his novella "The Body" while moving to Robert McCammon's "Boy's Life" and finally to Dan Simmons with "Summer of Night." In "Bone White" we meet two twin brothers - one is a school teacher and one is kind of a screw up. There is a link between the two as we have learned about twins, but when one twin disappears in the Alaskan wilderness, the loss is too much for the surviving brother. It is creepy due to the extreme remoteness of Dread's Hand, a former mining town. The bleakness of the weather - seems like gray and cold and snowy - adds to the unease as a search makes it easy to believe the Devil is responsible for the weird town and bodies found in shallow graves. Definitely worth a read and get it while it is free on Plus. I like Malfi's writing and would suggest both "December Park" and "Night Parade" if you haven't read them or listened on Audible.

If you want a solid Silent Hill/Twin Peaks vibe...

...this is for you! Even if the end result is a little lacking. The storyline is great and interesting. It just needed to explore its own mythology more. A lot of missed potential there. Otherwise, this is highly recommended. The writing is SUPERB STUFF HERE.
