Still suffering tremendously from his tragic loss, Jessie walked the Earth a prisoner of his own thoughts. Although each of his days had a purpose, continuing on his quest that may or may not end before his death, Jessie felt a certain level of emotional numbness that only being alone could provide him.

After his loss, as well as the other tragic losses of life he had witnessed since leaving his homestead high in the Rocky Mountains, Jessie enjoyed the solitude. He knew that the joys of friendship and love could lead to heartache and tragedy. No, if he died alone in this world, no one would have to shed a tear, no one would have to risk their life for his, and his choices would only put himself in harm's way. That cold, and empty simplicity seemed to be a good fit for Jessie as he headed east into the unknown of what may lay ahead.

Although Jessie found solitude in his empty heart - solitude that he felt he desperately needed - not a day went by that he didn't think back to those who he had encountered along the way. In this mad and twisted world, devoid of law, order, and the civility that people around the world had come to expect as the norm prior to the great collapse, Jessie knew that there were still good people out there. Good people who would have to face the evil that this lawless and dangerous new world had spawned once the walls of society came crumbling down around them.

Great book and series

Great series! I don’t have the third book yet.
Story and characters are very well developed
Non stop action from the start.
Narration by Patrick Freeman was excellent

GREAT LISTENING

As usual Steven Bird draws you in with wonderful character's and terrific storyline.

A good look into what will happen to our to our way of life if the world goes spinning out of control.
it's very easy to draw comparisons with what is happening in our country.What happens when good people sit back and do nothing and what can happen when a few good people stand up and fight for our God given rights.

Great series!

Really enjoyed the first book, this one took a different direction but just as good. The series kind of has a western feel to it.

EXCELLENT FOLLOW UP TO SOCIETY LOST.

Great follow up to the first book , the series could end here but the ending is open enough to lead to a continuation. Steve Bird does a really good job in the post apocalyptic genre . I find most of his characters to be well rounded and believable.

Depth of characters adds to the story

I’m enjoying listening to this series and following Jesse’s continuing adventures. The author has created some excellent characters, and has done so in a way that makes us feel like they are real people. This depth, along with all the action, draws the reader/ listener in quickly. I’m looking forward to starting book three in the series and seeing where Mr. Bird takes us next.

Another good read by the author

Reminds me of Longmire. If you like that type of story, mixed with your basic apocalypse you'll like it too.

Never underestimate a man with nothing to lose!

“Never underestimate a man with nothing to lose, especially a man with an unquenched thirst for vengeance, in a society lost.” I couldn’t help myself; the quote fit the book so perfectly I had to borrow it. We continue to follow Jessie in his search for his sister. Jessie’s despair follows wherever he goes. As he travels he pits himself against wrong doers, looking for justice in a world of chaos. I wonder if Jessie is enduring some form of death wish, seeking to punish himself for surviving his family; surviving the ordeal without reason. A depressing tale to be sure.

Awesome story

Another great book by Steve Bird. Read it, listen to it. Another great job by the narrator.

Poor narrator

You should never have changed narrators, this guy is very poor. Unfortunately his poor reading distracts from the story.
