About this listen

A collection of short stories featuring Sam Hunter, from best-selling author Jonathan Maberry!

Sam Hunter is a bit of an animal. He's a former Twin Cities cop who lost his badge because of excessive force. Abusive husbands, child molesters, and other lowlifes wound up looking like they'd been mauled by a dog...or a wolf.

Now Sam's a low-rent PI in Philadelphia. He takes the kinds of cases no one wants. His clients are usually on the fringes of society. The kind who are prey for all manner of predators - human and otherwise.

When Sam takes on a client, they become part of his pack, and no one protects their own better than a werewolf. At least the kind of werewolf like Sam, who comes from a long, long line of Benandanti - also known as "the hounds of God".

Stories in this collection include "Like Part of the Family", "Toby's Closet", "Crazy Town", "We All Make Sacrifices", and "A House in Need of Children".

This was my first real experience with Sam Hunter. I did read some of the Pine Deep stuff, but didn't remember him. In any case, these short stories were pretty enjoyable, although they did feel "light". I'm going to assume they were just side stories designed to give fans some Sam while not altering the main continuity.

That said, I'm unsure if I'd seek out more of the series. While Sam's world seemed interesting, nothing I heard led me to want to dive deeper into it. Also, it's probably more Maberry than anything else, but Sam has that exaggerated since of morality that leads to annoyingly long moments of reflection and lecturing. It's one of the things that annoys me about the Ledger series.

As always, Ray Porter is an EXCELLENT narrator!

Very enjoyable

Some of the best stories by one of my favorite authors, read by my favorite narrator! Fun, creepy, detective thrills that satisfy. Great book.

After a few minutes it will pull you right in. Sad when it ended. Nice little twist mix of classics

I've become a huge fan of Jonathan Maberry, especially when he is read by the narrative stylings of Ray Porter. I don't see how either of them have time to do much of anything other than writing/editing/producing and orating. During my Maberry/Porter journey, I stumbled across the Sam Hunter Case Files. It is an assembly of short stories, which can also be purchased individually here on Audibles. Each one is a brief glimpse into Sam's day to day PI work. I've grown to love urban-fantasy where not so normal things happen in an otherwise everyday, normal setting, and someone has to deal with them.

Similarly to Joe Ledger (another of Maberry's male protagonists in another series), Hunter is a former cop, he's dark around the edges, flawed, he's moody, but Sam has a certain set of principles - his own moral code - that I respect. He's got his own secret and a set of unique skills. Sam's my kind of PI and I wish there were more case files to share. I can only hope Maberry will give Sam the opportunity in his own complete novel series (beyond the novella shorts).

I loved this book, but it was too short!! Jonathan Maberry and Ray Porter are a match made in heaven.

Great but short

Sam Hunter is a fantastic character with great explorations of the various myths surrounding supernatural creatures. I very much hope to see further adventures of Sam and even to see him cross over into Maberry's Ledger-verse. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

What a great spin on the hard boiled P.I. tales. The narration was excellent also.

Enjoyable read/listen

I hope there are more stories about Sam Hunter. I'm not usually interested in detective stories, but this one is very different!

Great stories!

Any additional comments?

Create the character of a protagonist by molding Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe with a stand-up Zane Grey drifter and finally throw in the fact that he’s a werewolf. Now send people to him that need his special skills to assist with occult related problems. Add lots of humor, excellent prose and snappy dialog. It’s a formula for a very entertaining presentation by Ray Porter.

Well written, interesting and funny entertainment
