About this listen

There's something out there in the dark. There's always something watching. There's always something reaching for you. Always. And sometimes there?s someone you can call. Someone you can hire. Someone who knows these dark streets and back alleys. Someone who knows how things work in this part of town. Private eyes who are often as dark as the things they hunt. Investigators who know how to look in the shadows for the things that go bump. Good guys but not always nice guys. Hardboiled Horror collects fifteen original tales of noir mystery shot through with elements of horror and the supernatural. Occult detectives, paranormal investigators, seedy P.I.s, amateur sleuths and ghost hunters tackle the cases no one else can handle. The killer lineup includes Heather Graham, Kevin J. Anderson, Rachel Caine, Scott Sigler, Seanan McGuire Alethea Kontis, Jonathan Maberry, Chris Ryall, Dana Fredsti, Jim Beard, Jacopo della Quercia, John Gilstrap, Jon McGoran, Josh Malerman, Max Allan Collins & Matthew V. Clemens, Lois H. Gresh, and Nancy Holder. Edited by New York Times bestseller and five-time Bram Stoker Award winner Jonathan Maberry.

The stories were ok for the most part, but the Sherlock story was bad enough for me to take away a star. It’s goal was to show that even the smartest men are no match for the supernatural, and it would have worked if the characters hadn’t proven themselves incapable of anything but poorly formed conjecture throughout the story.

I hate poorly done Sherlock Holmes stories

I truly enjoyed these stories. a couple were so-so for me personally like the very last one. It made me think of that Canadian series Lost Girl. I couldn't stand that show.

I really must say, Audible, if you guys have any control over this, then please for the love of literature get female narrators for stories like the one with Artemis. ALL the characters were female and read by a male narrator. It truly takes away from the story.

I'm not sure I'm Gonna be reading Heather Graham anytime soon. That Krew of Hunters story really threw me off the rest of the series.

Well written and interesting tales.

1/3 of stories seemed scattered and completely lost me. 1/3 were ok. 1/3 were good.

Wasn't the worst but by far wasn't the best

Kept me entertained during a recent illness. I could have used abot 3 more of them.

wonderful

The stories were uneven, a few didn't really qualify as horror. A couple stories felt like prologues to full novels as opposed to complete stories.

Typical anthology, some good some bad

I kept thinking I should return this book but I will finish it. Only three of the stories, so far, kept my attention and made me want to look up other work by the author. I did end up skipping a couple of the stories. The rest have generally been just okay. I did realize that I a not a fan of Karin Allers. One of the stories I quit listening to was because of her performance.

A bit of a slog
