Acerca de esta escucha
Have you ever wondered what the Old Testament - especially the Old Testament law - has to do with your Christian life?
You are not alone. Some Christian leaders believe we should cast off the Old Testament now that we have the New. Carmen Joy Imes disagrees.
In this warm, accessible volume, Imes takes listeners back to Sinai, the ancient mountain where Israel met their God, and explains the meaning of events there. She argues that we've misunderstood the command about "taking the Lord's name in vain." Instead, Imes says that this command is about "bearing God's name," a theme that continues throughout the rest of Scripture. Listeners will revisit the story of Israel as they trudge through the wilderness from a grueling past to a promising future. The story of Israel turns out to be our story too, and you'll discover why Sinai still matters as you follow Jesus today.

Walton and Walton offer in The Lost World of the Torah a restorative vision of the ancient genre of instruction for wisdom that makes up a significant portion of the Old Testament. In the ancient Near East, order was achieved through the wisdom of those who governed society. The objective of torah was to teach the Israelites to be wise about the kind of order needed to receive the blessings of God's favor and presence within the context of the covenant. Here listeners will find fresh insight on this fundamental genre of the Old Testament canon.

What does God want? Sounds like a simple question, but if you give it a bit of thought, it’s really not. For starters, you have to know who’s asking the question. People will ask it for a lot of different reasons. Best-selling author Dr. Michael S. Heiser shows listeners that the answer is pretty simple. That might surprise you. There’s actually a long, remarkable story behind the answer - one that isn’t well known by most people interested in the question.

Historia
In his latest book, Angels, Dr. Heiser reveals what the Bible really says about God's supernatural servants. Heiser focuses on loyal, holy heavenly beings because the Bible has a lot more to say about them than most people suspect. Most people presume all there is to know about angels is what has been passed on in Christian tradition, but in reality, that tradition is quite incomplete and often inaccurate. Angels is not guided by traditions, stories, speculations, or myths about angels.

Are demons real? Are they red creatures with goatees holding pitchforks and sitting on people's shoulders while whispering bad things? Did a third of the angels really rebel with Satan? Are demons and "principalities and powers" just terms for the same entities, or are they different members of the kingdom of darkness? Is the world a chaotic mess because of what happened in Eden, or is there more to the story of evil? In Demons, Michael Heiser debunks popular presuppositions about the very real powers of darkness.

Wright takes a deep dive into Romans 8, showing how it illuminates so much else that God reveals in Scripture: God the Father, Christology, and the Spirit; Jesus' Messiahship, cross, resurrection, and ascension; salvation, redemption, and adoption; suffering and glory; holiness and hope.

God has provided salvation, but when does it begin? What is required of us? Can we lose it? These and other disputed questions have divided Christians for centuries. Matthew W. Bates has already shown that the gospel is about King Jesus and that faith includes allegiance. In Beyond the Salvation Wars, he unpacks additional truths from the Bible and the early church to describe how salvation happens.

Renowned theologian John Frame sheds much-needed light on the message and method of genuinely Christian apologetics in this landmark title. He insightfully examines apologetics in terms of proof, defense, and offense and clarifies the relationships of reason, proofs, and evidences to faith, biblical authority, and the lordship of Christ. Two subjects of particular note are Frame's fresh look at probability arguments and a stimulating investigation into the problem of evil.

Critics outside the church often accuse the Old Testament God of genocide, racism, ethnic cleansing, and violence. But a rising tide of critics within the church claim that Moses and other "primitive," violence-prone prophets were mistaken about God's commands and character. Both sets of critics dismiss this allegedly harsh, flawed, "textual" Old Testament God in favor of the kind, compassionate, "actual" God revealed by Jesus. Are they right to do so?

For centuries, the story of Adam and Eve has resonated richly through the corridors of art, literature, and theology. But for most moderns, taking it at face value is incongruous. Author John Walton explores the ancient Near Eastern context of Genesis 2-3, creating space for a faithful reading of Scripture along with full engagement with science for a new way forward in the human origins debate.

Women were there. For centuries, discussions of early Christianity have focused on male leaders in the church. But there is ample evidence right in the New Testament that women were actively involved in ministry, at the frontier of the gospel mission, and as respected leaders. Nijay Gupta calls us to bring these women out of the shadows by shining light on their many inspiring contributions to the planting, growth, and health of the first Christian churches.

The universal symbol of the Christian faith is neither a crib nor a manger, but a gruesome cross. Yet many people are unclear about its meaning, and cannot understand why Christ had to die. In this magisterial and best-selling book, John Stott explains the significance of Christ's cross and answers the objections commonly brought against biblical teaching on the atonement.

Eugene H. Peterson considers all the ways that Jesus is the Way compared to the distorted ways the modern American church has chosen to follow. Arguing that the way Jesus leads and the way we follow are symbiotic, Peterson begins with an extensive study of how the ways of those who came before Christ - Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah of Jerusalem, and Isaiah of the Exile - revealed and prepared the "way of the Lord" that became complete in Jesus.

Although it is a foundational confession for all Christians, much of the theological significance of Jesus’s identity as “the Son of God” is often overlooked or misunderstood. The first Christians were weird. Just how weird is often lost on today's believers. Within Roman society, the earliest Christians stood out for the oddness of their beliefs and practices. They believed unusual things, worshiped God in strange ways, and lived a unique lifestyle. They practiced a whole new way of thinking about and doing religion that would have been seen as bizarre and dangerous when compared to Roman religion and most other religions of the ancient world.

In The Soul of Desire, psychiatrist Curt Thompson suggests that underneath all our longings is the desire to be known - and what's more, that this fundamental yearning manifests itself in our deep need to make things of beauty, revealing who we are to others. Weaving together neuroscience and spiritual formation to open up new horizons for thinking not only about the nature of the mind but about what it means to be human, The Soul of Desire is a mature, creative work.

Great Audiobook!
This audiobook is very interesting I had heard about this book by listening to the Naked Bible Podcast were the author of the book was interviewed. It an excellent ready for anyone who enjoys digging a little deeper into the Word of God. Best of all its written in a way that makes it easy to understand. As to the recording they did a great job and the narrator who read this book did an excellent job! To sum it all up I would definitely recommend this audiobook!

Excellent Read and Study!
Excellent read for many reasons. One of which is connecting how the NT writers knit the OT covenant into their narrative. Thanks so much to Dr. Imes for creating this work! I have the book as well and found it very helpful to listen first then read and highlight after.
I look forward to listening again!

the commandment you probably think the least about
Wow! This has gone to the top of my recommend list!
I first heard Carmen Joy Imes speak during the 2019 Naked Bible Conference. After watching her presentation I was sold. I bought the audiobook and started listening immediately I was not disappointed.
Carmen did her doctoral work studying this exact commandment and as she has said multiple times after finishing her doctorate she wanted to put something out, that could be put in the hands of anybody in the church and make an impact as well as educate them on what it really means to Bear the LORD's name. In my opinion she fully succeeded in that goal! This book is extremely readable and yet very profound. Bearing God's name is a book that takes a teaching that you glaze over in life because you think you understand, and it breaks it wide open, showing you how important this single command is, and in the process showing you how the old testament is a perfect learning ground to show us How Great our God and Jesus are.
I would recommend Bearing God's name to pretty much anyone in the Christian faith, especially anyone who struggles with how the old testament fits with our faith, But also to well versed Bible nerds anywhere on the knowledge spectrum, you will love this book!

Greater Understanding
With clarity and conviction Carmen Imes heightens our awareness of a very important concept that for many years of my life has been watered down to simply, "Don't use God's name when cursing". Through this book I've been exposed to a much richer understanding of what it truly means to "bear" the name of God and of Jesus. This book (through the Holy Spirit and excellent work of Carmen Imes) has super transforming qualities that all Christians needs in their walk with Jesus. Praise God for faithful servants like Carmen Imes!

Wonderful book on common miss-understood scripture.
Wonderfully, clearly explained biblical concepts I thought I understood. Mrs. Imes caused me to question my understanding of biblical scripture in a humble way, but then didn’t leave me hung out to dry. An excellent theological work that is easy on the ears, somewhat difficult for the soul, but none the less great.
