About this listen

In 1954, Ensign James Cortell wakes up from a coma with memories of an alien scientist who had visited Earth some 50,000 years ago. Years later, he realizes this knowledge should not be taken to his grave.

Earth’s extraterrestrial visitors altered Homo sapien DNA to produce modern humans. Soon the industrialist overlords among the alien race realize that genetically altered humans offer a source of cheap labor. A galactic slave trade is born. When an unplanned mutation begins causing gigantism among some of the sapiens, Dr. Kadeya and her grandson, Ramuell, travel to Earth and plan to rectify the situation.

As the scientific and industrialist factions of Earth's rulers clash, Kadeya and Ramuell are caught in the middle. But behind the scenes, an even greater power is at play, and very soon their future—and the future of both races now inhabiting the planet—will change forever.

This book is intelligently written. It involves the full scope of concepts from science to archaeology, history and religion. The storyline is very well crafted and sophisticated. I love how the author has weaves so many topics and themes within the story.

The performance was flawless and enhanced the book. The narrator’s style helped me get into the book and did not distract me from the story.

Overall, it is fantastic!! So glad I read it.

Complex yet easy to follow story

After waking from a coma, Ensign James Cortell has memories of an alien scientist that had visited Earth thousands of years ago. It is not until years later that he realizes the story of the scientist must be told. He recruits writers to do this – a husband and wife team is given the difficult job of completing this in a comprehensive manner. As is the case with most entities (humans included) slave trade is instituted galaxy-wide. However, there are mutations being born that must not continue. Ramuell and Dr. Kadeya are sent to evaluate and fix it.

The author, Gary Beene has taken a very complex and action-filled story and woven it around issues of betrayal, stealth, and a struggle for power. Beene takes his time building the story and developing his characters, some quicker than others. Rich and vivid details allow the listener to become lost in the story and multiple themes. At first, I found the story daunting because of its length but after a few minutes, I was caught up in the story. The various themes and plot twists were flawless.

The narrator, Kevin Perkins gives a stunning performance that keeps the story moving forward quickly. Further, his voice talents kept the characters straight and the storyline smooth. I enjoyed his rich tones and modulations of his voice to project the story. I hope to hear more from Kevin Perkins.

This is an epic sci-fi novel that is complex yet through the efforts of the author, clearly written. The work of the narrator further enhanced the story.
