About this listen
A tyrannical high school principal. A young anarchist with nothing left to lose. One way or another, this place is going down.
Matt Moyer is an orphaned teen growing up on a primitive farm in the Pennsylvania coal region. He's homeschooled by his eccentric and philosophical great-uncle, who's a stickler for logic, reason, and intellectual honesty. Despite his uncle's reverence for veracity, inconsistencies arise regarding the old man's shady past and the teen's parents.
Through a harrowing sequence of events, Matt is forced to attend a public school. The feral teen finds it difficult to cope with the hypocrisy, propaganda, and misinformation that adults and children so readily accept. Faced with the possibility of expulsion, arrest, and ostracism, he must make a choice. Will he choose the easy lie or the hard truth?
Adult language and sexual content. Beware of spoilers in the reviews.

Story
A high school ruled by small-town politics. A rural community ruled by rumors. The truth may set them free. But are they ready for it? The residents of West Lake are resistant to change and afraid of confrontation. They’re happy to punch in and punch out and complain about the boss man. They’re friendly to your face but spiteful behind your back. They have their farms and their football, but, underneath that small-town veneer, there’s envy and self-hatred and greed.

Story
Carter Lynch was an outsider, an army brat transfer. He had what it took to be a star. He was focused, talented...violent. Carter didn't join the football team to make friends or win championships. He didn't care about anything but taking a starting spot, earning a scholarship, and leaving. Until he met Sara and Ben. Ben was desperate to fit in, desperate for the same starting spot, and desperate for the same girl. The uneasy friends were on a collision course that would change everything.

A tropical paradise destroyed by hurricanes. Converted into an open-air prison. The perfect place for undesirables. The American dream is a mirage. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is wider than ever before. In 2050, people struggle for their piece of a shrinking pie. In 2050, the seeds of discontent are growing. The elites will stop at nothing to maintain their dominance. But the people are awakening to the rigged game. And they’re very, very angry.

Story
Mo Williams is cursed. Cursed with the loss of his football scholarship. Cursed with the loss of his mother. But life goes on, and Mo needs a job, preferably a good job. Menial jobs pale in comparison to the roar of 106,000 fans at Beaver Stadium. His big break comes in the form of a job interview at Total Sports Agency. But this is no ordinary interview and goes beyond the typical résumé and references.

Story
James Fisher taught his students to question authority, much to the chagrin of his principal. He loved his wife, but his marriage was failing. His life was a bubble in search of a pin. After his bubble burst, he moved to a backwoods town, content to waste away. He was awakened from his apathy by a small girl with a big problem. It was safer to look the other way. Getting involved would place James squarely in the crosshairs of the local police. He was afraid, but he did it anyway.

That’s what I had to decide. I had it all. At least that’s what people told me. Beauty, brains, and a rich husband. I deserved it too. My fiancé had cheated on me with my best friend. But, I won in the end, or at least I thought I had. Until Christmas of 1999. My ex-fiancé, Danny, showed up at my parents’ house, wanting to talk to my father. Danny’s a police officer, and my father’s a retired officer. A six-year-old girl had disappeared without a trace, resembling a case my father had worked on years earlier.

In a world of infinite information and propaganda screaming at us from every direction, the truth is of paramount importance to our mental health, and can be a matter of life and death for every person on this planet. In The Propaganda Project, I expose the tricks of the propagandist--the tricks needed to legitimize the illegitimate, to make us think up is down, black is white. I dig deep into the muck to extract the truth about government, and the financial interests pulling the strings.

Story
Jimmy Lee Hickam grew up along Red Dog Road, a dead-end strip of gravel and mud buried deep in the bowels of Appalachian Ohio. It is the poorest road, in the poorest county, in the poorest region of the state. To make things worse, the name Hickam is synonymous with trouble. Jimmy Lee hails from a heathen mix of thieves, moonshiners, drunkards, and general anti-socials that for decades have clung to both the hardscrabble hills and the iron bars of every jail cell in the region. This life, Jimmy Lee believes, is his destiny, someday working with his drunkard father at the sawmill, or sitting next to his arsonist brother in the penitentiary.

Mason has never known his father, but longs to. All he has of him is a DVD of a man whose face is never seen, reading a children’s book. One day, on a whim, he plays the DVD for a group of comatose teens at the nursing home where his mother works. One of them, a beautiful girl, responds. Mason learns she is part of an experiment intended to render teenagers into autotrophs—genetically engineered, self-sustaining life-forms who don’t need food or water to survive.

I thought I'd left Blackwater, Texas, behind for good. I didn't belong in the small town, but my dad wouldn't listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way: Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of the ghosts I was trying to forget.

My name is Salvador Rosas. Back in the barrio, my past is written on the walls: ESHB. Short for East Side Hollenbeck, my father's gang - my gang. Hell, it's a family tradition, one that sent both my brothers away. They used to call me "Ghost" because I haunted people's dreams. Now I've got nothing going for me except a hipster gringo mentoring me in a new career. An ex-con making craft beer? No mames. Still, people in this neighborhood look out for one another.

Thought Provoking Story
This was my first experience with Phil M. Williams' work and on the whole, I enjoyed it. The ideas and concepts which the author presented throughout this story are fascinating and thought provoking. I found the main character to be interesting and engaging. My only concern with the story, was that at times, I felt that the minor characters didn't always act, in ways that people would act. In spite of my disagreement, I am interested in more of this author's work. Tristan Wright's and Sarah Grace Wright's narrations were fine. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Matt's struggles.
The story was good. But I sure don't agree with the author that school and religion are a means to control people. We have to have order in this world. There will always be evil, to overcome.
Having said that, I really liked Matt and all the characters. The story kept me listening into the night.
The dual narration was wonderful. A very nice listen.
Bonus. I picked up a few gardening tips along the way.

Great book!
I agree with the plot line in this book. Every teenager should have the opportunity to voice their opinions and speak their mind. Adults tend to force kids to hold back & want kids to be cookie cutter. People rely too much on factories & stores to provide unhealthy foods, instead of growing their own healthy foods. I have been just as guilty of this! The older I get, the more I realize about life. My brother is 150k in student loan debt, unable to find a job. I owe 37k myself! Is college really necessary for everybody? I don't think so anymore. I would love to go back to the 1800's & live a simple, healthy lifestyle! Of course technology is a great thing, but at what cost?

Worth the Read
Caveat: I received the of the book in return for a review. I thank the author.
I found the novel a mixture of a coming-of-age tale meets the outsider-against-the-system story.
The book fits firmly in the Young Adult category, but it can be enjoyed by anyone. I enjoyed it.
While in parts didactic (the protagonist’s political and philosophical positions standout) the story does not drag. The books mentioned as a part of the protagonist’s education should be read and thought about by all.
The narrators proved adequate.
