About this listen

Molly Appleby is on cloud nine. The talented reporter and senior staff writer for Collector's Weekly just got engaged to the man she loves. When she takes time off to plan her wedding and shop for a vintage gown, the spunky writer with a growing reputation for finding corpses and solving murders vows to her family and fiancé to avoid trouble at all costs - until the wedding photographer she visits turns up dead in his home, the victim of foul play.

So when she's not busy shopping for the perfect dress or sampling endless varieties of cake, Molly once again finds herself attempting to unravel a mystery, and the endless string of women spurned by the playboy photographer leaves no shortage of suspects. When another corpse turns up and Molly discovers that the woman who sold her a gorgeous vintage gown might be the murderer - and that the gown itself may be linked to a decades-old crime - Molly must summon all her sleuthing skills to find the killer before her preparations for the big day become plans for her funeral.

Vintage Gown, Diamond Tiara, & Murder in Vermont

A Treacherous Trader, the fourth in the series, is probably my favorite so far . . . Molly is engaged to Matt and planning their wedding . . . in Vermont . . . that Yankee state . . . whose inhabitants are so NOT accustomed to the sweet twang of Molly's and her mother, Clara's southern accent . . . Molly's search for the perfect wedding dress, cake, photographer, and place for her ceremony leads her into more than she bargained for . . . and uncovers an age old crime and love story in the process . . . great listen, unexpected resolution . . . had me guessing until the end . . .

AWESOME!

I think this is the best book in the series so far. I know Molly usually draws everything out. This time was much better. And the ending!!!!! You HAVE to read this book.

Molly's mantra must be, "Focus on the wedding!"

Molly travels to Vermont; so far away from friends and warm weather, to plan her wedding. You'd think planning a wedding would keep Molly out of trouble; but she's in the middle of it again, to only find her wedding accessories are what lead her there. This could only happen to Molly. Thanks for letting me come along too.

Ellery--where did you come up with all this. A Fun read and better listen. Again applause to the talented And Arndt.

Not bad

The mysteries are good. The main character wasn’t as obnoxious in this book as in previous ones.

Murder

As the author finished each book you can see that the story lines got better and better, twisting family histories, more advanced knowledge in the area of antiques and pottery. It is like the reader’s education in these areas grow with each book. The narration was fluid, and consistent throughout the stories told.

Book 4 - antiques mystery

This is the 4th book in this series, and I've loved them all. This book however, I had mixed feelings about. There was a lot I liked, but also a lot of really unlikely and unbelievable things happened which seemed forced or too unrealistic.
But first, let me mention the things I really liked... I liked that this book again was set away on vacation, because we get a new locale with all new characters. Molly & her mom were the two main players, and the others are all brand new. However, if Molly ends up moving to Vermont with Matt then these characters might be mainstays going forward.. So I look forward to seeing if that happens. I also liked how there is a two fold story line happening, which is introduced from the first page. A story from the past intertwines with at story in the present and it was really cool to see it come full circle in an unexpected way.

Things I didn't love.. At first, Kitty goes to Vermont with Molly and she complains the ENTIRE time. Finally she leaves and Clara (her mom) comes alone to finish wedding planning and it was a breath of fresh air. Honestly, as a reader it should have been Clara & Molly only the whole time. Kitty was insufferable. Secondly, the detective in Vermont instantly takes Molly on as his co detective (a complete stranger) and acts like he's helpless without her insight. A little heavy handed. He also falls for Molly because she's not the typical "tall blonde with no brains" that he used to date. That stereotype is old & insulting, but it keeps getting played out as if Molly can only be smart because she's plus size. And lastly (possible spoiler) were supposed to believe someone at the end just gives Molly $60,000 in antiques as a gift? Again... Not in real life. It was done to wrap the story up but didn't feel authentic.

So like I mentioned, some good, some not great. I think the new author writing with Ellery is a hindrance vs a benefit. All the other books in the series were all great in keeping it realistic but exciting. I'm still looking forward to the next book in the series & seeing what's next!
