第三回の課題図書は、いよいよ文学史上に比類のないモンスター級の傑作『罪と罰』の登場です。「世界で最も有名な1冊」といっても過言でない小説ですが、意外に読んだことがないという方も多いかもしれません。貧しさの中で殺意を抱いていく主人公のラスコーリニコフ。「善」という目的のためならば、人を殺しても許されるのか? ドストエフスキーが『罪と罰』で仕掛けたこの根源的な問いは、時代を超えてなお私たちをとらえて離してくれません。
一緒に読む人は、さまざまな古典を「いま」とリンクさせながら分かりやすく読み解く、作家の島田雅彦さん。『罪と罰』の面白さを、徹底的に教えていただきます! ひとつ目のポイントは、現代にも強烈に通じるテーマです。ドストエフスキーが描いたのは、運命に翻弄される人間の小ささ。それは、格差社会、テロ、SNSなど、「いま」の私たちの問題と繋がっていきます。そしてもうひとつのポイントは、いつ読んでも誰かしらに心を重ねてしまうキャラの立った登場人物たち。島田さん自身は20代で主人公ラスコーリニコフに共感し、最近では退廃的な中年男スヴィドリガイロフに惹かれるようになったといいます(六本木あたりで一緒にお酒を飲んでみたいのだとか)。ドストエフスキーの多重人格的な、華麗なるキャラクターの描き方にも注目です。
