志賀直哉（しが・なおや）
日本の小説家。1883年（明治3年）宮城件石巻生まれ。学習院を経て、東京帝国大学英文科に進むが中退。在学中の1908年（明治41）、武者小路実篤、柳宗悦、郡虎彦、有島武郎、有島生馬らと人道主義、自我・生命の肯定などを掲げ雑誌「白樺」を刊行。小説家を志す。父親との確執など、肉親との複雑な実生活を描く心境小説『城の崎にて』、代表作となる『暗夜行路』、ユーモアに満ちた『赤西蠣太』など名短編も多く遺す。1941年（昭和16）芸術院会員、49年（昭和24）文化勲章受章。享年88歳。
