語り手も聞き手も、怪異だの幽霊だのを本気で信じているのかどうかは解らないが、古来より日本人はこういった怪談を楽しむ遺伝子を持っているらしい。
しかし、そんな中で、狐狸に化かされたり、河童や天狗に遭遇した、巨龍を見たという話があったとしたら、どう思れるだろうか?
幽霊は人が死んで成仏できなかったもの。それは百歩譲って理解したとして、妖怪なんてこの現代社会にいるわけがない。そう思われるだろう。
だが一方で、そんな現代の妖怪遭遇談が、私の元には集まってきている。そんな妖怪譚をまとめ、お聞かせすることにしたい。
同時に、古文献や伝承に現れた妖怪たちと比較、関連付けながら、わが日本に今も棲みつく妖怪たちを紹介しようと試みるものである。
内容紹介
『市朗妖怪百科 第四集 ~ 想像上の妖怪? 神? 未知生物として実在? カッパ目撃談の数々を語る!』
日本の妖怪での代表格の一つはカッパであろう。カッパは飛鳥時代にはその原型が示唆され、大陸から大挙やって来たという伝説も残る。
その正体は、中国伝来の水神であったり、異民族であったりしたのだろうが、それでもしばしば目撃され捕獲されたという記録もある。絵に残されたそれは、まさにあのカッパそのものである。
私が蒐集した現代の実話系怪談に中にもカッパ目撃談は数多く存在する。目撃談としてのカッパと歴史的背景、文献等からカッパの正体を考察してみようと思う。
「モノノケの影」(8分)
筆者が大学時代に聞いたK先輩の体験談。水産大学で警備をしていたK先輩は、真夜中、いけすで魚を捕るモノノケを見たという。
モノノケは子供くらいの大きさで、飛翔して姿を消したという。その姿は、河童そのものであった、と。
「沼地からの訪問者」(9分)
ある郊外に家を建てた学校教師。だが休みの日の午後に玄関のドアをノックされる。
出るが誰もいない、という日が続いた。ある日気が付いた。
その何者かは、近くの池からやってきて、玄関の所で姿を消している。
ところがある日、玄関の戸を開けっ放しでいたら、足跡が中に入っていた…。
「禁断の山道」(6分)
岡山県の山間で生まれ育ったというJさんは、小学校までの遠い道のりを歩いて通っていた。ある日、遅刻しそうになった。そこで山越えの道をとった。
だがこの道は、決して通ってはならない、と家族から注意されていた道。
でも言わなければばれない、そう思って道を行くと、奇妙なものと鉢合わせをする。
「どこの子?」(5分)
岡山県出身のある落語家さん。彼も田舎で育ち、周りに子供もいないので近所のおじさんと釣りをよく行ったという。
ある日、夜釣りをしていると、明らかにカッパと思われるものと遭遇する。しかしおじさんは立腹している。知らない子に釣りを邪魔されたと。ところが……。
「張り手」(4分)
ある温泉町に住むSさん。幼いころ、夜中に山の方からトーン、トーンと連打される音をよく聞くようになる。近所の大人たちも不思議がり、音がする場所をつきとめたという。
音のヌシは、大木に向かって張り手をする河童であったという。だがそこは毒ガスが噴出していて近づけない…。
「カッパを見た」(3分)
昭和40年代、和歌山から大阪への通勤途中、紀ノ川の鉄橋で、河童を見た、という男性がいた。彼によるとそれは…!?
