おらず文治堂の全集編集者が（仮題）としてつけたものである。
エジプト史を題材としており、セトナ皇子と呼ばれる一人の賢き皇子は
ふと疑問を抱く。最初の神ラーはどのようにして生まれたのだろう。
はじめは馬鹿馬鹿しい事だと気に留めぬようにとしていたのだが
だんだんとこの思考は深みにはまり、神の誕生の説についてばかりでなく
目に留まる日常にすら巡らせるようになる。「なぜこのようなものが
存在しているのだろう」かと
多くを知るものが深みに陥りすぎることにより訪れる末路を
中島敦独特の観点で描いた作品となっている。
中島敦（なかじま・あつし）
昭和時代前期の小説家。1909年東京生れ。東大国文科卒。
祖父は漢学者中島撫山、伯父にも漢学者が多く、父は中学の漢文教師。
1933年横浜高等女学校の教師となり、かたわら作家を志して習作にはげんだ。
持病の喘息悪化のため、転地療養を兼ねて41年パラオの南洋庁に赴任する。
唐代の伝奇「人虎伝」を素材にした「山月記」が深田久弥の推挽で42年2月の「文学界」に掲載され文壇にデビュー。同年5月発表の《光と風と夢》も好評で以後創作に専念。
パラオ南洋庁書記の職を辞して作家生活に入ろうとしたが、同年12月持病の喘息のために夭折した。代表作に「李陵(りりょう)」「弟子」「光と風と夢」など。
