Fantastic Ghost stories
Reviewed: 04-15-25
The narrator could read a grocery list and I would listen with rapture. He has excellent timber and variations for multiple characters. I may be buying books just to hear him speak.
Since this is a complete collection of the author's stories, some of them are not as interesting for me as the rest, but certainly a 9.5 out of 10.
I did not know of this author, until I was listening to a podcast of "Shadows at the Door", who gushed about this person's writing. They have adapted quite a few of his stories, this one being Season 1, episode 7.
The author's ability to talk to the reader, as the writer, about the goings on in the story is excellent, and witty.
The appendix, at the end, is especially interesting, on his theories of a good ghost story, and gave many examples of other authors that he admired.
I binged the book in 2 days and have gone back to some of my favourites. 18 hours of listening for 1 credit can't be beat.

Story
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Fascinating ideas

This book was chosen by me so that I might read "Story of your Life". It was adapted into the movie "Arrival", which changed my way of thinking on time. I have seen the movie 3 times since then. Your mileage may vary on it.
I discovered that it was a short story, and a very good one at that. I could see the changes, but also the similarities with the movie adaptation.
What was a surprise, was the other stories in the package. All thought provocing and worthy of a read.
The narration, by various actors, was excellent and this may lead me to other books of this kind.
It's good to stretch out into uncharted territory. I've been too cosy with murder mysteries.

It’s been an enjoyable and murder-free time for Judith, Suzie and Becks since the events of last year. The most exciting thing on the horizon is the upcoming wedding of Marlow grandee, Sir Peter Bailey, to his nurse, Jenny Page. Sir Peter is having a party at his grand mansion on the river Thames the day before the wedding, and Judith and Co. are looking forward to a bit of free champagne. But during the soiree, there’s a crash from inside the house, and when the Marlow Murder Club rush to investigate, they are shocked to find the groom-to-be crushed to death in his study.

What's not to hate? I love this style of murder mystery. The previous of this series was excellent, and I only discovered it until I saw the show. The characters are easily discernible from each other, and are delightful to know. It's complicated enough for surprises to be enjoyable and clues for good guesses.
If there's a new one to get, I've got the credits for it.

In appearance Hercule Poirot hardly resembled an ancient Greek hero. Yet, reasoned the detective, like Hercules, he had been responsible for ridding society of some of its most unpleasant monsters. So, in the period leading up to his retirement, Poirot makes up his mind to accept just 12 more cases: his self-imposed "Labors". Each would go down in the annals of crime as a heroic feat of deduction.

Some very good stories

What's not to like? Having one of the cast portray all the characters perfectly? Of course!
Some interesting stories?
Yes please.
Although, I noticed there was quite a bit of drug crime in these stories, and the preaching of it's terrible use and abuse on the user. Was there something going on, at the time of the writing of these pieces?
Other then the over preaching of the obvious horrors of addiction, the stories are quite good and it was a pleasure to hear the characters again.
He really is an excellent narrator.

One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. At first, I was slightly put off by the main character, as I found her overreaching on her abilities, when confronting another character, but a muscles through as the plot hooked me in.
I then soon discovered that she would learn quickly and when the other "good gals" came in, the story hummed along quite well.
The narrator was excellent at creating quite different voices for the main, secondary, and even the random extra characters.
Some of their plans went awry, but they were able to pull them off, not in an expert way, but 3 older ladies doing the extraordinary things.
The ending was very satisfying.

The concept of an author, writing a book about what happened to him while writing another book.
I'm running through the whole series, and so far, they have been using the same narrator. I think. I've read so many that I'm pretty sure I'm right.
His ability to voice different characters, that are easily discernable, is very pleasing to my ears.
The two main characters are always a pleasure to visit upon. Old friends.
The other characters are very different in personality, and the voice acting brings them to life.
On to the next one.

A Good Long Sequel to the short stories
Reviewed: 09-13-24
I had discovered Inspector Chen stories on a Old Timey Radio podcast, and they were a dramatisation, with multiple actors, music and SFX.
When I found that this continues his life, I was eager to "read" the long form book.
I was surprised and a bit disappointed upon discovering that it was a standard narration and not by the main narrator from the previous series.
But, as the story moved along, the narrator gave an older read of the character, that revealed a long timeline for the character. His vocalization of the various characters became more discernable and pleasant to hear, and the story was deeper that the previous shorts.
I wonder if there is a final book, but this one was a good read.
I may just buy the physical copies of the series.

I had heard a few of these mysteries on Old Time Radio podcast and found the style of writing and a look into crime in China fascinating.
A chief of police, who is a poet, involved in political Intrigue was too good of an idea to pass up on.
The acting is excellent, and i thought that some of the actors were very British in accent delightful.
the main actor, playing Chen, was excellent and the surrounding actors believable.

To add more cool visuals, then the books use was necessary, and worked very well.
I was more interested in the insites of the Psychiatrist, and it helped flesh out many scenes.
