Some great stories mixed with questionable ones

First things first, all of the narrators and all of the stories that are more than 15 minutes in length are excellent. Highlights include Censure and Brotherhood of the Storm. The problem lies within the REALLY short stories, the ones coming in at 10 minutes or less. Basically the issue is why do they exist? They're all too short to really tell us anything, and they're barely long enough to warrant it's own chapter in a full-length novel. One of the stories is literally:
Salamander: Hey, can we get a ride?
Iron Hand: Sorry, no.
Salamander: Pretty please:
Iron Hand: *sigh* ok fine.
That's it! Was that really worth it's own story to be narrated?

This book is pivotal for the entire series and it does not disappoint. This book truly marks the beginning of the Heresy and things are going to get a lot worse from here. The story is excellent, the narrator once again kills it, I have no complaints with this book.

Initially I wasn’t really interested in this book, as it’s all about the Word Bearers. And seriously, who likes the Word Bearers? But oh my did this book give us such insight! First off, my statement still stands, who likes the Word Bearers? But beyond that we get to know Captain Argel Tal and he’s actually likable. He’s struggling with endless conflict between his loyalty and where his legion is heading, constantly questioning what is right and what is wrong.

The narrator could have done better with some of the voices. Any time a character was shouting he performed it in that overdramatic way that didn’t feel believable at all, but outside of that it was a solid performance.

Good god is this book brutal. First off David Timson gives a stellar performance. The story is from the view of the Emperor's Children. What does the Emperor's Children sound like on paper? Pompous jerks. What voices does Timson give for the Emperor's children as well as their artisans? Pompous jerks. I think he knocked it out of the park both in narration and voices.

As far as the story goes, this gave everything you would expect from a main Warhammer story, and then some. I would argue that pretty much every death in the story is not only brutal, but carried weight with it as well. 5 out of 5.

Overall an enjoyable anthology

Here's a quick review of each short story:
Rules of Engagement - Good
Liar's Due - Really Good
Forgotten Sons - Good
The Last Remembrancer - Meh
Rebirth - Bad
The Face of Treachery - Really Good
Little Horus - Bad
The Iron Within - Really Good
Savage Weapons - Good

As you can see, there is more good than bad. My favorite story was Liar's Due, as it centered on human characters dealing with the realization of what the civil war could mean to the future of their society. The biggest downside to this anthology were the two stories narrated by John Banks, Rebirth and Little Horus. His narration is fine, but he doesn't do voices for any characters, making it hard to distinguish who is talking. And honestly there's not much emotion when he's talking so it became difficult to pay attention. I've listened to this entire anthology twice and I'm struggling to remember what those 2 stories were even about.
The Iron Within is another great story that shines in this book. That story and Liar's Due are reason enough to give this book a shot.

What an intense short story! This is my first book centering on the Primarch of the Raven Guard and he’s now amongst my favorite Primarchs. Toby Longworth once again delivers a stellar performance and I was gripped from beginning to end!

A good section of this book is a re-telling of Galaxy In Flames, albeit from the Death Guard’s perspective. Fortunately it doesn’t drone out what we already know from the previous book. A solid 95% of this book also centers solely on one character and the turmoils he has to face during Horus’ betrayal. The big fault here lies in the narrator. He does a great job with the actual reading of the book, but most of the voices are terrible. I know the legion is called the Death Guard, but that doesn’t mean every single member is actually dying, and yet nearly every voice sounds just like that. I don’t get the impression that these Astartes are towering figures to be feared, but more like very sick men that you avoid because they may be contagious. So far I’m making a habit of listening to each book of the Horus Heresy twice, before I proceed to the next book. With Flight of the Eisenstein, I’m tempted to just move onto book 5 after only one listen. Great story, but annoying voices.

This book is damn near perfect. An excellent and relatable protagonist. An interesting concept regarding alien threats and interstellar travel. Heavy moments, comedy mixed in where it was appropriate. And the narration was top tier. I 100% recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this reading. I’m fairly new to the lore of Warhammer 40K and this was an excellent start into the insight of the Imperium. The politics, the combat, the inner-conflicts, all of it was excellently paced and kept me entertained. Looking forward to listening to the next book.

This is a short, but sad story. It shows that in the world of Warhammer, death is usually preferable over life.
