It is the 31st millennium. Under the benevolent leadership of the Immortal Emperor, the Imperium of Man hasstretched out across the galaxy.

It is a golden age of discovery and conquest. But now, on the eve of victory, the Emperor leaves the front lines, entrusting the great crusade to his favourite son, Horus. This book isn’t so much a narrative plot where you have a conclusive beginning middle and end. It’s really a impression of the Imperium before the Heresy. To that end, it’s tinged with sadness as you know the inevitable conclusion. Still, a interesting read and would recommend.

The hope before the crash

Really enjoyed the story and going to continue.
The acting didn't always feel consistent but overall very enjoyable.

Amazing story and good performance

Clearly heavily influenced by starship troopers, but good. It sets up the Warhammer universe quite well.

A good foundation of lore

authors voice really helps to add to the epicness that is the start of the series

epic. large. huge.

This is just the first part of a long and epic tale of the Horus Heresy, and it does a damn good job start to finish of sowing the seeds and setting the stage for the later events that would shake the foundations of a universe.

Great narration and powerful worldbuilding story

Fantastic performance, and a good book overall. My first read of these books, but i felt the start was rather abrupt. No deep intro to the setting or characters. The end also felt rushed. There was no climactic ending, but rather just a stop. Likely designed to lead quickly into the next book of the series.

Great listen. Plot start/finish were abrupt.

Despite the in medias res, this first book gives a good introduction to the WH30k universe. Well written characters, and a both tragical and wondrous story.

What an introduction to the series

Was a great introduction to a series that plays such a pivotal role in the Warhammer 40k universe.
