Well crafted LitRPG

The story is well done - the voice acting is top notch - not as stat crunchy as many others - and characters including secondary ones that you can care about.

If you are new to the series this episode in the life of my favotite protagonist might not be where you’d want to start. The novel seems to be more of the ‘things happened’ cut out between books. Someone who has listened or read the others up to this point I believe will enjoy it. someone new ti the series I think would be at least a touch kost and confused as to what is going on.

Story
In the Domains, those born with magic have only one place where they can prove themselves worthy of it: the brutal pits of the arena, where they will either grow in power and build a following with every victory, or risk dishonor and death in defeat. For these “Gladiators”, the ultimate prize for their struggle is a place among the Chosen, the immortal rulers of that vast and decadent empire.

When I go and search for a new audio book I look up Luke Daniels. If you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to him yet, don’t wait. Every character from the protagonist to the most minor is nuanced and easily recognizable. Add to his excellent narration with a great story from Luke Chmilenko who is one of my favorites and Chris Harris whom I’m unfamiliar with but plan to remedy and you have a damn fine book filled with detailed small unit fighting and the drama of surviving the machinations of both the gladiatorial circuit and the political system based upon it that has grown slowly corrupt as it ages.
Plus as a bonus you get Mr. Daniels bloopers at the end. (Which a collection of should be published as a stand alone download, just saying).

Story
You are no one. Level zero. Empty of mind and memory. Even your past has been stripped from your brain by the inscrutable System. A long, difficult road lies between you and remembering any part of who you are. A road punctuated with one death after another. You are too puny to survive by might alone. Information is the single resource that might keep you alive, but the brainless “digis” have none of it. Only those with experience can give you what you need, but most care nothing about you or your plight. In fact, some make it their mission to kill you.

The book started off in a good place to me. Light on the Litrpg side but a good non-crunchy book is nice every once in a while. It started going to hell shortly after the female main showed up. It then became a running she-bitch escapade finding out how much a complete asshole a female character could be per minute. I almost finished it but with 2 and a half hours left i absolutely didn’t give a damn anymore.

John Slater never had any interest in video games. Now he’s got to beat one to save his brother. A battle-hardened, ex-special forces soldier, John was never a fan of games...unlike his brother. But now, he’s got to learn and learn fast if he has any chance of saving his younger sibling. Magic, monsters, and levels are new to him, and his real-world skills aren’t as useful as he thinks.

As always an absolute kickass performance from Luke Daniels. The story has vast potential - it suffered a bit from the lack of mundane battle skills but that was part of the class restriction that the main overcomes eventually. Excellent overall.

Its a damn fine book in my opinion. I normally Don’t write very wordy reviews however with all of the negatives about the author hating the United States I felt it important to Remind those people that the entire story and the slight little jabs against not only the United States but France and Australia itself where the protagonist is from is absolutely in line with the character and his feelings in a fictional world.
If you were as morally outraged and offended as some of the reviewers acted, you need to go take a good long hard look in the mirror.

Story
Lieutenant Callum Harper knows that his team are as tough as they come: nine highly trained men and women and one battle robot who’s 11 feet of pure, cybernetic muscle. But as they drop through the atmosphere of the uncharted planet Capsun 23, Cal can’t shake the feeling that something is off about this mission. Three data drones have previously touched down, but soon after went dark. And now, all communication with a group of civilian researchers has been lost. Intel suspects scavengers are to blame - or at worst, pirates. But Cal’s instincts are telling him otherwise.

Story
Between raiding Red Caps and dives into the local dungeon, danger seems to lurk around every corner. Adventure. It makes Hall wonder if he should remain as Lord of Skara Brae. The excitement of life in the wild calls to him, but so do his responsibilities. Both duty and adventure collide when members of the Greencloak Rangers, Hall's favorite faction from the original game, arrive in Skara Brae seeking Leigh's help in her role as Druid Custodian.

Doesn’t measure up
Reviewed: 09-14-21
I am a fan of the series. I personally hold Pavi Proczko up as one of the better narrators of audiobooks. Troy Osgood is one of my favorite authors and I’ve enjoyed watching Hall and the others grow and am absolutely thankful for the author ensuring a believable MC that I identify with even while using a convoluted point xyz experience awarded leveling system.
Yet on the shoulders of all that this fourth book in the series falls flat compared to the first three. The first half of the book seemed a exercise in detail by explaining a dive into a poor quality dungeon with crappy loot (no not really half). When the book actually started moving along it was acceptable but still didn't seem up to the quality of previous offerings. I absolutely will buy the next book and I suggest that you support Troy by purchasing this book as well and make your own mind up. He and the continuation of the story is worth it.
