Story
Ever since Angie Russo woke up from a near fatal run-in with a coffee maker, she's been able to talk to - and even worse, understand - one very spoiled tabby named Octavius. He says his owner was murdered and that she's the only one who can help bring the killer to justice. And, well, that's just the first of the wonderfully whacky mysteries they solve together. Add in a traumatized terrier witness and two murderous Sphynx cats who speak only in riddles, toss on your favorite deerstalker cap, and let's go sleuthing!

I don't think the editor wanted any pauses in this recording, which is a shame. The sentences run together so you end up not being able to digest what you've just heard and envision what's going on.

Enjoyed it, but...
Reviewed: 05-21-23
Love this series, really enjoy Peter Lovesy books, and I try to listen to anything Simon Prebble reads. But, this one took the formula and just sort of made a character plot salad at the end. Maybe it'll make more sense if I listen again, but right now it seems like Mr Lovesy simply refused to put in an extra few lines that would make this one more plausible... up until then, great time as usual with the characters we love.

Story
Hercule Poirot made his first public appearance in 1920 at the age, one guesses, of about 60. He finally breathed his metaphorical last in 1975 at the age of maybe 75 or 80. And in that short span of time — either 55 years or about 20, depending on how you count it — Poirot became one of England’s most profitable and ubiquitous export commodities.

Yikes! The narration choice
Reviewed: 09-29-22
I'm totally baffled as to why they chose this narrator. Crazy inappropriate for this material. any British accent --even the faintest essence of one--would have made this infinitely better.

Story
Twenty-five-year-old fitness-instructor Elle has been toiling away in the LA rat race since her teen years with nothing to show for it but a “vintage” apartment (with a permanently clogged toilet), an “alt-comedy” (unemployed alcoholic) boyfriend, and an anorexic coworker who’s constantly surpassing Elle at work because her dad owns the place. While Elle might not have a rich daddy to fall back on, her luck changes when she finds herself being aggressively pursued by a hot, rich 45-year-old man, a.k.a. a zaddy.

I am not sure why I clicked on this book, it is not my usual fare. But I enjoyed it! And then I realized that it was realistically telling the story of so many women, and without giving too much away, some who have recently been in the news because their "zaddy" is now in prison, including the motivations of the characters.

I adore these books and always love when an author is the narrator, but Simon Brett's producer really really should help us out here. hearing every inhale was super distracting and quite unnecessary. Misophoniacs may need to skip this one.

Story
Charles Paris, middle-aged actor turned amateur sleuth, is vacationing at a small English seaside town. Irresistibly drawn to anything theatrical, Charles seeks entertainment at the local music hall and endures a series of not-so-wonderful vaudeville acts in the hope that the man given star billing will be worth watching. This performer, Bill Peaky, comes on stage with his electric guitar, grasps the microphone, and drops dead, due to faulty wiring of the stage equipment.

So relatable!

I had the same experience very recently: full grown adult dumped a Chick-fil-A bag on the ground from the window of their shiny Audi, then followed that with their cup and some loose empty sauce containers--all while parked about 20 feet in front of the restaurant, facing the line and the employees working it. I was so angry it stayed with me for days. Who DOES this? Unfortunately the same folks who'd feel fine with assault if confronted, so yep. I did order some trash grabbers so I can opt to pick up other people's trash if it really bothers me 🙂
Thanks for doing an episode on this subject!

The super singsong-y narration with no regard to what's actually happening in the story is super distracting. Gonna try to get through it, but ugh. I thought audio book narrator's were actors. Poor narration makes it hard to hear the actual writing style.

A little weird
Reviewed: 03-30-20
Narrator has a pleasant voice but some of the suspenseful scenes sounded like Bridget Jones' Diary, too light-hearted. Definitely no strong female characters in this book, which would be ok if the main theme wasn't distrust. Both female leads end up inexplicably trusting a relative stranger to save them after huge betrayals.
