I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

The story was very suspenseful, surprisingly twisty, and the gaslighting was infuriatingly believable. Narration was okay, at best. But the ending—are you KIDDING me? Aaaack!

Unexpected . . .

But not in a good way. I was anticipating a humorous and uplifting story but found neither to be the case. There were some parts I found amusing but never truly humorous. Also, the frequent leaps back and forth through various timeframes were quite difficult to follow in an audio version. It may be easier in print when the reader could quickly double check where they are in time, But when listening to an audible version, it was too ease to lose track of the storyline. Just as I got back on track with where we were in the story, the timeframe would change again. I found that to be distracting and too much “work.”

Intriguing story told via excellent performance including fine narration with music and sound design. I appreciated how well the music/sound design enhanced and supported the story without feeling intrusive or distracting. It was just right. And the podcast approach was genius—very effective. Kudos to Lisa Jewell!

Story
Thirty-three-year-old Abby Stern has made it to a happy place. True, she still has gig jobs instead of a career, and the apartment where she’s lived since college still looks like she’s just moved in. But she’s got good friends, her bike, and her bicycling club in Philadelphia. She’s at peace with her plus-size body—at least, most of the time—and she’s on track to marry Mark Medoff, her childhood sweetheart, a man she met at the weight-loss camp that her perpetually dieting mother forced her to attend.

Jennifer Weiner is probably the first “go to” author I’ve experienced—in print or audible—because her stories are timely and speak to me on many levels. When a new book of hers is released, I’m all in. I preordered this one in anticipation of another delight, but the first words out of “Abby’s” mouth nearly made me drive off the road! Shrill and grating barely touch the tip of the narrator’s iceberg. Her inflection and cadence were, at times, so off as to make it hard to follow the sentences. Good grief! True to form, Weiner’s story was worthy of a good review and I stuck with the listen because of that. But Abby’s narrator decimated most of the enjoyment. Please consider replacing her with a re-recording by someone else. Seriously.

Another Winner!

Not my usual “beach read,” but so well written. Jennifer Weiner addresses an important and timely topic, not dwelling on details of the original incident (although those are disclosed) but, more important, revealing the long-term and far-reaching impact such an experience has thereafter, with a nod to both the roots and the perpetuation of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Somehow the author does this in a manner that is engaging, with characters who are relatable and enjoyable. Read it!!

Story
Two women. Many aliases. Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Story
Lewis Madigan is young, gay, out of work, and getting antsy when he’s roped into providing end-of-life care for his insufferable homophobic neighbor, Chester Wheeler. Lewis doesn’t need the aggravation, just the money. The only requirements: run errands, be on call, and put up with a miserable old churl no one else in Buffalo can bear. After exchanging barbs, bickering, baiting, and pushing buttons, Chester hits Lewis with the big ask. Lewis can’t say no to a dying wish.

This story gave an intimate glimpse into relationships as affected by end-of-life issues, from the perspective both of the patients and the caretaker, which provided plenty of food for personal reflection. The characters were very realistic and the narrator was FABULOUS! Truly, I think listening to this Audible version must be superior even to the print book; the narrator was so effective. The narration made me feel as though I were actually in the presence of the characters. Amazing. I’d give 10 stars just for the narration, if I could!

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

The story was enjoyable—not exactly a real page-turner, but intriguing nevertheless. It was the characters who drew me in, and the performance of the narrator was outstanding. The subtle differences in the way she voiced various characters kept my interest in following the story and made the characters very believable. Her narration added a level of depth to the story that I’m not sure I could have experienced in the print version.
