Hogwarts while the world burns

I was able to make it 4 hours into the book and then just couldn't anymore. The premise was great. A hero from another world get reborn after being murdered, Lives a mundane life on an non-magical planet. Remembers his past life and is able to use those memories to help him fight. Then the world gets invaded by monsters. He fights some monsters and saves some people, A message pops up asking if he wants to get stronger. He says yes as monsters fight and people die around him, at which point he gets transported to adult Hogwarts were there is no real rush to get back to earth.

This is seriously jarring and cringy as hell. Even if it gets better later on, the level writing and pace of the book is just bad. The world is being attacked and my family and friends could be dying, oh well can't be late for fifth period. Ugh... Go read Dungeon Crawler Carl you'll have more fun.

Don't get me wrong, it is somewhat enjoyable. It just feels like the author took Beware of Chicken ran it through ChatGPT with instructions to change it a little, then copy/pasted. Unless you don't have anything better on your list, go with Beware of Chicken and save your money/credit.

The reader does a good job of separating out each characters voice and makes it easy to follow along with the story. There were some voices that I found to be grating and annoying to listen to, particularly the valley girl.

The MC is just too pathetic and dumb to be relatable or feel bad for. He isn't interesting and there is no real progression in his personality. This is a must skip.

The story is well thought out and a lot of fun to read/listen to. I am not saying it is the best of the best. Just a fun listen. That is the story though. I am not sure who the %^*@ decided to direct the read to jar you out of the story by abruptly changing the tone and rhythm of the story, but when the classes and abilities are mentioned, no matter what it is done in a robotic voice that shatters the minds eye focus. If the director or reader or author is reading this. Please change how the reading is done. It ruins a fun book.

I really wanted to write a full and detailed review for this book, but the amount of similarities I saw between The Wheel of Time and the Stormlight Archive is just too much. I really feel like this is someone who read those series and pulled the magic system, plot, names, and character names straight from them. The story is still fun and you can enjoy it, but it is hard to overlook the blatant mimicry bordering on copyright infringement of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's work. If you like those series you'll either enjoy this book because it's familiar or you'll hate it because it's too familiar.

Michael Kramer is awesome as always.

Boring, monotonous, and a little rape-y

This book was just not for me. I don't mind having a jerk of a main character. The magic system is well thought out and I was even able to get around the first person narrative. The world building is also well written. However, for me that is where the pro's stop.

The main character comes off more as an incel's fantasy. The main character talks more about his sexual exploits than he does about the story line. Misogyny is rampant throughout the story and there is little redeeming qualities for him. I have read the Witcher series and game of thrones. I have no problem with the sexual nature in those. My issue with this book and it's character is that I feel like the story is more about the character and his delights than it is about fantasy or adventure.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but mine is that this is not worth your time to read. It's just plain boring.

With the minor exception that the first part of this book drones on about the scientists of the time, it overall is a great read in terms of learning what Pandemics do. It does diverge from the pandemic a bit more than i'd like, but the information and lesson we can learn are invaluable. Parts of this book I felt like I was listening to current events. Honestly, if you read/listen to nothing else of this book. The epilogue alone is worth the time. It spells out EXACTLY what has happened in 2020 with COVID-19 and why. There is a trigger warning though. As of now it is August 5, 2020. After listening to this book I am more angry at my government and the world due to how much we knew about preventing a pandemic and did nothing. We have learned nothing from the 1918 pandemic and it seems that history may not repeat, but it sure as hell rhymes.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work Audiobook By John M.; Nan Gottman; Silver cover art

I found the authors take on a good marriage to be refreshing and more accurate than any others I have come across. I appreciate the use logic and testing of hypothesis to determine what keeps a marriage strong. The point the author raises is enlightening and helpful for those of us who prefer to approach issues in a more thought out way, as apposed to using metaphors, and platitudes to help make sense of a marriage. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to keep a marriage strong, rebuild a marriage, or what to look for when marriages are struggling.

The only bad thing I could possibly say about this, is that I wish there was more. Stephen Fry does and excellent job or retelling the stories of Greek myth. He truly brings to life the old stories in a fun and enjoyable listen. Highly recommend.
