Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

This may be my first 5 star review for everything! Fantastic story, wonderful narration, & was engaged the whole time. Very similar premise to Red Rising, but with more mystery & thrill. Highly recommend!

Probably the best audible performance I’ve had yet! The speaker is absolutely wonderful at creating personalities with her voice without them being distracting caricatures.

Story
A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit.

My least favorite cosmere novel
Reviewed: 07-25-24
Big Sanderson fan & loved the other 3 Cosmere novels, but just couldn’t really get into this. Not as much world-building, character-development, & fleshed out relationships. Just didn’t care about any of them that much & it took a while for anything to happen so was disappointed unfortunately.

Story
There is a world. One of endless night, surrounded by an even deeper darkness. Filled with nightmares come to life, twisted shapes that slink to windows and ease open doors, sliding across floors to look down on helpless faces. There is another world. A bright world, so bright it burns. Filled with stacked stones that call forth miracles, raised by callused hands that tremble in their work, drained with each stone lifted, settled, lifted again.

Love the story! Hated one of the narrators
Reviewed: 07-16-24
Such a beautiful story! I have read three of the four cosmere novels & this one is my new favorite. The woman narrator in this reeeeally took away from the story in such a huge way that I will recommend friends to read the book instead. Her woman voice was fine but her man voice for Painter was just absolutely brutal. Was a combination of Shaggy from Scooby Doo & a “cowabunga dude” accent. It’s like when your mom is trying to do an impression of one of your friends in high school & overacts it in such a way that it is physically painful & is embarrassing. I just wish it would go back to the other narrator the whole time. But love the story!!! Glad to see some romance in the cosmere!

Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

A sweet & silly story

This is a story meant to be enjoyed. It’s filled with silly metaphors & comedic themes in a similar style to the narration of The Princess Bride. Very different than his other work & could be shared with a wide age range audience.

Very fun, exciting story filled with interesting characters & nail-biting action! I watched the Shadow & Bone tv show first & I think it actually helped, as the characters I can now see were perfectly cast & I imagined their faces/voices. Great narrators too!

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Entertaining!
Reviewed: 06-30-23
Easy & fun read! I was thoroughly entertained & excited for the sequel in November! Wasn’t a big fan of the narrator as her voice felt too old to be playing a 19/20 year old, & I feel like the “snarky teen” over pronounced sarcasm came on too strong for when a lot of the dialogue was more understated flirting.
