Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride. Narrated by Michael Kramer.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Note from Brandon:

I started writing this in secret, as a novel just for my wife. She urged me to share it with the world—and alongside three other secret novels, with the support of readers worldwide it grew into the biggest Kickstarter campaign of all time. I’m excited to present this first book to you at last: a different type of Brandon Sanderson story, one I wrote when there were no time constraints, no expectations, and no limits on my imagination. Come be part of the magic.

Sandersen impresses with his kraftmanship

The twist got me!

As usual, wonderfully paced and interesting characters. I didn't expect the story to be so engrossing for a shorter than usual book.

Highly Entertaining

Excellent story, well read by Michael Kramer. If you are a fan of Brandon Sanderson, you will enjoy this standalone story that is told by Hoyt. For those that are familiar with the Cosmere world, you will see similarities to the latter Stormlight Archive stories. Most highly recommended.

Fun read for all ages

This book made me laugh pretty hard several times. I always appreciate good humor that’s rated PG because it can be difficult to come by. It’s a good story but definitely not one of Sanderson’s best. I highly recommend reading/listening to it if you’re a Sanderson fan. It’s not nearly as long as most of his books, so you don’t have much time to lose if you don’t like it.

Full of color and light

Another win for Brandon Sanderson. Beautifully written, draws you in with adventure yet still makes you giggle. I love how he connects the Cosmere. Excellent narrating by Mr. Kramer.

Beautiful storytelling

It’s been awhile (probably since Circe) since an audiobook has felt like listening to a master storyteller. I was whisked away into Tress’ world, intrigued by so many world facets and characters (including the narrator of the tale), and loved just how much Tress developed yet stayed true to herself. Tress’ quiet yet determined nature reminded me of Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle, another character I love. I highly recommend this to anyone who has felt themselves wrung out and in need of some genuine magic. 5/5
