Story
Meet Me at the Morgue is the story of a kidnapping that led to four murders. In his search for the killer, Howard Cross digs deep into the Los Angeles underworld, finding along the way a beautiful, lost adolescent mourning a dead lover, a suitcase hidden under an aging sadist's bed, and a slovenly gentleman with an ice pick in his neck. Ross Macdonald has never written a story quite like this, and neither has anyone else.

Nostalgic and Cringy
Reviewed: 09-16-22
It really does read like a classic Cary Grant film, so in that way, it is somewhat comforting. Like slipping back in time to a friendly memory with family.
However, it is so dated by its rather campy and predictable characters. Those guilty spill all at being caught, and typical almost wooden 1950's characters with women knowingly settling for less or having skewed morals in or with men.

I like good clean reads. I was not comfortable with chapter 3's descriptive sex scene.

What a tale! And the person reading did a beautiful job! I will say that it is definitely a morally gray novel, which is pretty interesting.

A New Favorite

The writing was clever and carefully researched, which I greatly appreciated. The main character is someone I could personally get behind and be a cheerleader for. And, it was pretty clean - which was such a happy surprise!
10/10 to the author!
my ONLY complaint has to be that the performance was lacking somewhat. Every American sounded monotonous and odd.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Got to Chapter 5
Reviewed: 02-23-22
I have to be honest, I decided to give up at Chapter 5. I have no curiosity to finish. It honesty just sounds like the complainings of a middle aged woman that finds herself, her best company. And I am fine with that. I really don't feel the need to sit with her any longer.
Thus far it has been less than witty, and even less engaging.
And I can get past a not-so-great narration if the storyline is gripping.
Agh. Maybe I'll try this book again when I am 50 and am bored with life, waiting for grandchildren.

Great writing!
It read like a modern take on a more classic style read.
I could see how some may find it a little dry, especially if they are used to books with mainly dialogue and fast paced moving scenarios. But this was constructed like a classic. Frankly, I loved it and am excited to see what more this author has written.
