Publisher's summary

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Excellent narration of an all time CLASSIC

The narrator has a great voice and good pronunciation of french. It was a pleasure to hear the tale told, my french is not at all good so when I read the book years ago I would stumble over all those french names in my head.
I found I kept finding all kinds of opportunities to listen when normally I only listen to books in my car. Even though I knew the story it kept me enthralled and I just wanted to keep listening and hear it unfold.
Well worth listening too!!!

Great! Truly One of the classic stories.

Be prepared, for this book is fairly long. This version is 52+ hours. But it's easy to listen to because the story is so great.

Didn’t want it to end

I read the abridged version some 12 years ago, and as much as I loved it, never dreamed I would tackle the unabridged. Audible (and this narration specifically) made that easily attainable. This story is simple riveting, and I genuinely was mourning its end. The narrator did an incredible job with all the different characters. For such a long narration it kept me interested nearly from start to finish. I only have a handful of books that are clear five Star winners in my book, and this one makes the short list.

Excellent Narrator!

I was skeptical because I once tried and failed to read the Count of Monte Cristo on my own. The book was long and daunting, and the French pronunciations were difficult to read. The audio book was more than a supplement. Awesome story, and phenomenal performance by the narrator. His voice is enrapturing, and his performance on dialogue is smooth. 5 stars for sure.

Any additional comments?

I thought Bill Homewood did a phenomenal job!! His accent in French, Italian and British English are incredible, and how he manages to change his voice for each character is skillful and also helpful to follow the conversation along. He makes the book very entertaining.

Justified Classic

The performance was great, lots of emotion. The story is classic, though sometimes the cultural gap makes character's decisions hard to sympathize with. Still, Monte Cristo is a really compelling character. Worth the long time listening.

Amazing tale, stupendous reading!

This is the first time I've read this book, so it was all new to me. I enjoyed the story so much I have diligently listened to 53 hours of narration over 2 1/2 weeks. The most amazing part was listening to this reader identify with each character with what seemed like infinite accents and voices! He made this story fabulous!

Outstanding 19th century novel

Expertly performed story in the style of the 19th century writers. There were a lot of descriptive passages and a lot of French names and places to keep track of. It was very, very long, but I think I Will enjoy it more with a second reading.
