Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated. In his magnum opus, Rodney incisively argues that grasping "the great divergence" between the West and the rest can only be explained as the exploitation of the latter by the former. American Apartheid shows how the Black ghetto was created by Whites during the first half of the 20th century in order to isolate growing urban Black populations. It goes on to show that, despite the Fair Housing Act of 1968, segregation is perpetuated today through an interlocking set of individual actions, institutional practices, and governmental policies. In some urban areas the degree of black segregation is so intense and occurs in so many dimensions simultaneously that it amounts to "hypersegregation".

African Friends and Money Matters started as notes for Westerners when they traveled and worked in Africa by providing a lens to understand customs and cultures outside of their home culture. Maranz uses his experiences in Africa to discuss how different cultures manage money, time, and personal relationships, and how these differences sometimes result in friction and misunderstanding. He prompts the listener to reflect on the different goals of African and Western economic systems, and shares ninety specific observations he made regarding money while living in Africa.
