Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Really good speculative fiction
I like this story set in a prehistoric arena. It ages well unlike other fiction that gets trumped by real tech advances.

more proof that harry Harrison is a ruler of scifi
the second in his Eden trilogy, this was a fantastic continuation of the story and was a ride to behold. I recommend this series to all who enjoy paleontology, vintage sci Fi, or just good reading in general.

Another solid second
Harrison has never been a letdown on sequels! A true master of words. Rummel has gotten better too. His voice has far better inflection since the first. I look forward to the third.

A good speculative read
I finished the entire series about a week ago. It's a fun "what if" world. The 2nd book isn't quite as good as the first and is focused on the inter-species conflict, and thus ends up a skosh closer to military sci-fi in nature.
I enjoyed the book, and by the end of it, wanted to know how it'd all turn out.
I've listened to the entire Lost Fleet series, also narrated by Christian Rummel. I liked him in both this trilogy and that series. He does a good job with female voices, which is more important in this book than you might think, as most of the reptilian species' main characters are female. Of course "female" when applied to such a species and such a different mode of communication is more for the reader than anything related to any reality.
He also keeps consistency between characters and across the books, which I sincerely appreciate.

Amazing story, excellent narration.
It has a been a long time since I read this story, perhaps 30 years. Listening to it as an audiobook was a new experience and very welcome.
Harrison has created an amazing world in this series with some very interesting concepts. Truly an original idea.
