Elly Griffiths’s knockout novel begins with a story-within-a-story: a hair-raising reading from “The Stranger,” a ghost story by the mysterious author R. M. Holland. Cut to the present day, where English teacher Clare Cassidy works in a school set in Holland’s former house—and where the murder of Clare’s best friend appears to be a perplexing case of life imitating art. I don’t know what it is about books-about-books, but I always find them irresistible, even when they aren’t as brilliantly executed as this one! So it was a pleasure to find an exquisite homage to Wilkie Collins and M. R. James wrapped up in a twisty contemporary plot and told via alternating points of view. My favorite character might have been the queer Sikh detective Harbinder Kaur, but the expert narration from four different performers made each perspective a treat to hear, while the mystery kept me guessing throughout. Immersive and sure-footed, The Stranger Diaries, like all great ghost stories, delights in casting a spell—and listeners will be just as delighted.

Repetitive.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all griffiths previous books in the Ruth Galloway series. I was quite disappointed in this stand alone novel. I found the repetition of "the stranger on the train " short story repeated over and over to weave into the main story quite tedious. It was also easy to tell early on who was guilty. This one was not up to Griffiths' usual quality.

Perfect Halloween Story

Clare Cassidy teaches English at Talgarth High School former home of famous author R.M. Holland and his beloved wife Alice who met her untimely death from a fall or perhaps a push? It is said that sometimes you can see the Lady in White as she roams the school. Clare also happens to be writing a novel about the author. R.M. Holland is known for one short story "The Stranger" and was said to have hated it.
One Fall day shortly before Halloween Clare's best friend and fellow teacher Ella is found dead. She was murder and "Hell Is Empty, and All the Devils Are Here ". Just like what is written in Holland's one famous book.
This is the perfect book leading up to Halloween. It's is a lovely blend of Gothic Victorian writing and a contemporary mystery sure to capture you and not let you go. I have never read an Elly Griffiths novel before but she has a new fan. Her writing is beautiful. You can picture the old, Victorian school Clare teaches at. You feel as if you are creeping up the dark stairs leading to Holland's study. The university campus Clare and her daughter visit is written so well you can almost smell the Autumn air.
My favorite part of the book though is definitely the characters. They are written so beautifully that you hear each and every voice. Georgie definitely sounds like a teenager. An extremely smart one but still a teen. You will love meeting D.S. Harbinder Kaur and her parents as well. Each voice is distinctive.
I would recommend listening to the audio version if you can. There is a book within a book and the narrators are so good.

I work overnights, and I listened while I was working away. It was such a good book, I enjoyed the thrills and chills. Kept my attention the entire time, I couldn’t wait to hear more!!!!

An Excellent Book
I was a bit skeptical of this book at first, but it had such great reviews that I thought I’d give it a go. I was not disappointed. The book is not only filled with thrilling adventure, but also literary art. If you’re considering this book, read it.

Great short story in here
I loved the stranger, a short story included in the form of Victorian ghost stories. I also liked the intermixing of the short story with the narration.
The initial narrative was a little slow to get started, but once it picked up, I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery.
