In this book, Terry Sejnowski explains how deep learning went from being an arcane academic field to a disruptive technology in the information economy.

Sejnowski played an important role in the founding of deep learning, as one of a small group of researchers in the 1980s who challenged the prevailing logic-and-symbol based version of AI. The new version of AI Sejnowski and others developed, which became deep learning, is fueled instead by data. Deep networks learn from data in the same way that babies experience the world, starting with fresh eyes and gradually acquiring the skills needed to navigate novel environments. It took nature many millions of years to evolve human intelligence; AI is on a trajectory measured in decades. Sejnowski prepares us for a deep learning future.

Outstanding Account on the Field of Deep Learning!

Excellent book! For additional insights and fresh perspectives, but definitely a must, read/listen to The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind's Evolution by futurist and evolutionary cyberneticist Alex M. Vikoulov.

Great book

Exposed me to plenty of learning resources, and chiefly taught me about the new advances in Machine Learning, and I was glad to hear how it all connects to biology, neuroscience. That basically, learning one field or use-case of AI/ML will make me a better developer for Bioinformatics and longevity for example.

Few needles in haystack.

Provides some perspective on Deep Neural Networks impact. But interesting take aways moments are very less for time we spend. Also - there is no pattern in how chapters (or even sections within a chapter) are written. One sentence is about an incident in 1976, next would be about 1953 & possible describing different technology, the next would be 1996 incident.

Panoramic history of the field

Fascinating narrative of the development of deep learning and its links to neuroscience. There is so much dense detail of concepts and ideas that I bought a text version as a reference...

A rather technical, yet personal, journey through the development of AI from the perspective of the author.

Gripping tale of the story behind intelligence

Terrece systematically explained the advancement of technology behind deep learning and AI in the backdrop of human understanding of biological intelligence. Unless the reader is a specialist in this field, it is difficult no to be amazed at the developments in deep learning, neural networks and AI. This book gives the reader orientation to the modern thought on the subject as he explains the seat of intelligence and how the need to solve problems originated enhanced and shaped intelligence. Enjoyed listening to this book. The narration by Shawn Compton was excellent compliment to the book.

Great content with decent narration

Only complaint I had about the book is that the narrator repeatedly mispronounced the word “silicon” as “silicone”. One is a crystalline mineral used in microprocessors and the other is a synthetic polymer used in window caulk and breast implants. I’m unaware of any AI applications that run in or on the latter. ;)

Amazing book!!!!

This should be required by people that want to understand the future and where we are heading.
Well written and extremely and interesting listen to someone who loves the subject of learning… machine or human ;)
