Acerca de esta escucha
Brought to you by Penguin.
Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before
The audiobook of Small Gods is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor and director Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings; Planet of the Apes). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.
'You should do things because they're right. Not because gods say so. They might say something different another time.'
Religion is a competitive business in the Discworld. Everyone has their own opinion and their own gods, of every shape and size - all fighting for faith, followers, and a place at the top.
So when the great god Om accidentally manifests himself as a lowly tortoise, stripped of all divine power, it's clear he's become less important than he realised.
In such instances, you need an acolyte, and fast. Enter Brutha, the Chosen One - or at least the only One available. He wants peace, justice and love - but that's hard to achieve in a world where religion means power, and corruption reigns supreme...
'An intriguing satire on institutionalized religion corrupted by power . . .' Independent
'Deftly weaves themes of forgiveness, belief and spiritual regeneration' The Times
You can listen to the Discworld novels in any order, but Small Gods is a standalone.
The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Historia
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Historia
A delightfully funny, fantastically inventive collection of twenty unearthed short stories by Sir Terry Pratchett, the award-winning and bestselling author and creator of the phenomenally successful Discworld fantasy series. These rediscovered tales were written by Terry Pratchett under a pseudonym for British newspapers during the 1970s and 1980s. The stories have never been attributed to him until now, and might never have been found—were it not for the efforts of a few dedicated fans.

Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Historia
For generations the misty Shadowline has marked the boundary between the lands of men and the lost northern lands that are the lair of their inhuman enemies, the ageless Qar. But now that boundary line is moving outward, threatening to engulf the northernmost land in which humans still live - the kingdom of Southmarch.

Historia
Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods. It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought. And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. So Udo forms a new plan: clay. After all, clay jars are used to store everything: meat, herbs, and, his personal favorite, ale.

Wonderful telling of one of Pratchett's best
I've loved this book since it came out. It's one of the best Discworld novels. I was very happy to know that it was finally going to get the performance it deserved. The reader absolutely did it justice, with solid voices for all characters. Maybe not always the voice I thought (especially Didactylus) but it absolutely worked. Loved it.

An excellent standalone Discworld novel and a wonderful production
I’m beyond thrilled to have new audiobook recordings of the Discworld novels being released, and I chose to dip into them first with Small Gods. Andy Serkis delivered a solid performance, and while the novel has a bit of a slower start, it’s full of the wry wit, cutting allegory, and incredible world-building that Sir Terry has always been known for. GNU Terry Pratchett.

Stunning performance, difficult subject matter
This was an outstanding performance by some of my favorite artists, however the book wasn’t my favorite of Sir Terry’s. It’s incredibly intelligent, poignant, and highly relevant, but perhaps not what *I* needed in terms of a Terry Pratchett fix. This shouldn’t deter anyone, it’s just a heads up that this novel deals with some serious examples of religious persecution, torture, and warfare that are extra serious to me as a historian because many more atrocities of this nature actually have taken place in the past and, in some places, are taking place today.
That being said, Pratchett wrote beautifully on the subject and brilliantly used his skills to shed light on the nature of religious extremism and persecution. Definitely relevant, definitely intelligent, just darker and more “real” than I perhaps wanted.

Decent fantasy novel but not enough to want to read the rest of Discword
The story allows for some decent laughs about the absurdity of religion. Reminded me of some Neil Gaiman, maybe Neverwhere (which I didn't like as much rereading as an adult as I did a teenager) crossed with American Gods.
I realize that this book is pretty much in the middle of the epic but I felt like it wasn't cohesive enough for me to want to go to the beginning in the Disc World series, but most of that is because of how epic the epic is -- ain't got time for that.
Narration was great.

Almost perfect
I did find the pause and music at the start and end of the footnotes distracting and it honestly got pretty annoying. Other than that bit of nitpicking, I did love this version. Small Gods is my favorite book, not just my favorite Discworld book, and I must've listened to the former version 15 times. I like Om's voice so much better here. Death sounds fantastic. I highly record this version!
