Acerca de esta escucha
"A truly healing book." (Glen Lord, President, The Compassionate Friends)
Unthinkable. Unbelievable. Heartbreaking. Whatever words we choose, they all fall far short of the reality. The loss of a child is a terrible thing. Accidents. Disease. Suicide. School shootings. Murder. Natural disasters. War. No matter how or when, the death of a child (no matter what age) can shatter the heart. How do you survive this? Can you?
Best-selling author, hospice chaplain, and grief specialist Gary Roe uses his three decades of experience interacting with grieving parents to give us this heartfelt and intensely practical book. In Shattered, Roe walks the listener through the powerful impact a child's death can have - emotionally, mentally, physically, relationally, and spiritually.
Shattered unpacks the depth of this loss, describing how:
- Intense, unpredictable emotions (sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, fear, depression) can hijack us at a moment's notice.
- Our minds spin. We can't concentrate. We forget things. It feels like we're going crazy
- Our bodies get hit. Symptoms surface. Our health can be impacted. Illness can invade.
- Our souls feel crushed. Guilt shakes us. What we believe gets challenged.
- Our relationships change. Marriage, family, and friendships feel the impact.
- Our plans and dreams are shattered. The future has changed. We're in uncharted territory.
In Shattered, you will discover how you can:
Deal with the volatile, unpredictable emotions assaulting you.
- Manage the massive changes that are occurring in your life and routine.
- Move through feeling overwhelmed and begin to heal.
- Take care of yourself and your health amidst all the challenges.
- Honor your child with how you grieve.
- Love those around you, even with a broken heart.
- Navigate spiritual uncertainties and faith questions.
- Turn couple, family, and relational upheaval into personal growth.
- Support your other children in their grief and parent well through this.
- Find the people and resources you need to begin to recover.
- Decipher whether counseling or grief coaching would be beneficial for you.
- Live life as well as possible while in the midst of great pain.
- Make your child's life count in deep and powerful ways.
Shattered is not a magic pill. The death of a child cannot be fixed. But comfort, compassion, guidance, and hope can be found in this book. If you are a grieving parent or grandparent, this book is here to help. We will never be the same, but we can survive. And to some degree, we can heal. Shattered can help. Listen to this book, and let the healing continue.
Shattered was a 2017 Best Book Awards Finalist.

A loved one dies. Your world is upended. The emotional pain can be intense. Your heart begins asking questions. "Am I going crazy? Am I going to make it? Where is God in all this"? Many of the people around you don't know what to say or do. They utter cliches and platitudes. You need something more than this - far more. You need to know that it's okay to hurt, to be sad, and to grieve. And most of all, you need the comfort of God's presence. You need to experience his compassion and love. You need to know he is walking with you in your pain and grief.

On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kübler-Ross' and Kessler's professional and personal experiences.

In Grief is Love, author Marisa Renee Lee reveals that healing does not mean moving on after losing a loved one—healing means learning to acknowledge and create space for your grief. It is about learning to love the one you lost with the same depth, passion, joy, and commitment you did when they were alive, perhaps even more. She guides you through the pain of grief—whether you’ve lost the person recently or long ago—and shows you what it looks like to honor your loss on your unique terms, and debunks the idea of a grief stages or timelines.

Historia
Four simple phrases - "Please forgive me", "I forgive you", "Thank you", and "I love you" - carry enormous power to mend and nurture our relationships and inner lives. These four phrases and the sentiments they convey provide a path to emotional well-being, guiding us through interpersonal difficulties to life with integrity and grace. Dr. Ira Byock, an international leader in palliative care, explains how we can practice these life-affirming words in our day-to-day lives.

It's not a surprise that our fast-paced, overly analytical culture is pushing people - especially women - to spend countless hours thinking about negative ideas, feelings, and experiences. Renowned psychologist Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema calls this "overthinking". Her groundbreaking research shows that an increasing number of women - more than half of those in her extensive study - are doing it too much and too often, hindering their ability to lead a satisfying life.

It’s not easy, but God will use it to lead you toward healing. This path is called lament. In the midst of your darkest times, you will discover that lament leads you back to a place of hope - not because lamenting does anything magical, but because God sings a louder song than suffering ever could, a song of renewal and restoration.

When a loved one dies, the pain of loss can feel unbearable—especially in the case of a traumatizing death that leaves us shouting, “NO!” with every fiber of our body. The process of grieving can feel wild and nonlinear—and often lasts for much longer than other people, the nonbereaved, tell us it should. Organized into fifty-two short chapters, Bearing the Unbearable is a companion for life’s most difficult times, revealing how grief can open our hearts to connection, compassion, and the very essence of our shared humanity.

When social worker Lisa Keefauver became a widow in 2011, she was alarmed to discover that even though 100 percent of us experience loss, we’re living in a grief illiterate world. In her work as a therapist and in her search for help in the wake of her own loss, Keefauver began to see how the misguided stories we consume about grief lead to unnecessary suffering. Responding to the problematic narratives that grief is something to move on from after completing the five stages like some sort of to-do list, Keefauver became a grief activist.

Perfect title, Not a helpful book.
I have read several grief books and they were all great, but this one sucks. I tried to give it a chance and made it through Chapter 15. The author basically told me over and over how I was feeling and it seemed forced. There was also an unhelpful question at the end of every chapter. The chapters ended super fast to the point where I felt like I didn't gain anything from it. The narrator was horrible. I've read books that confirmed my emotions and all that, but this one does it in the most annoying, uncomforting way. It doesn't help at all. I already know how I feel. If there are tips in this book, I wouldn't know it because it was too painful to listen to the words. I definitely want a refund. I could've used my credits on something better. Finding Meaning by David Kessler was by far the best book I've read on grief amongst other authors.

very helpful information
it's amazing and tragic that Gary has experienced so much loss and grief, however those experiences have given him the ability to write and sort others who stumble into this dreadful world. great resources.

Shattered surviving the loss of a child
This book has helped me. I did all of these things. It let me know my feelings were normal and it takes as long as it takes. It was written from someone who knows. This made a difference.

Good as long as you’re a Christian
Has a lot of good helpful material to get through loss. The end gets very religious and helpful if you’re so inclined.

Excellent, Real, I identify with it.
This was more then just a book. It is real. I lost a child and could identify with every word, thought and feelings of the book, it hit me to the core of my being. I am still going through the process and I can't wait to see where I will be through applying what I've learned and heard. Thank you.

Just What I Needed!
This was a great read! It allowed me to see that I’m not alone on this grief journey, and that my negative outlook is a natural occurrence.
I will definitely revisit this book.
