Acerca de esta escucha

The plot thickens for American gothic writer Penelope Parish when a murder near her quaint British bookshop reveals a novel's worth of killer characters.

Penelope Parish has hit a streak of bad luck, including a severe case of writer's block that is threatening her sophomore book. Hoping a writer in residence position at The Open Book bookstore in Upper Chumley-on-Stoke, England, will shake the cobwebs loose, Pen, as she's affectionately known, packs her typewriter and heads across the pond.

Unfortunately, life in Chumley is far from quiet, and when the chairwoman of the local Worthington Fest is found dead, fingers are pointed at Charlotte Davenport, an American romance novelist and the future duchess of Worthington. Charlotte turns to the one person who might be her ally for help: fellow American Pen. Teaming up with bookstore owner Mabel Morris and her new friend Figgy, Pen sets out to learn the truth and find the tricks that will help her finish her novel.

Cute and cozy

I was unimpressed at first but I kept listening and found myself pulled in the the story. The characters are interesting and so was the mystery. I enjoyed the narrator, who switched between dialects smoothly

Terrible narration!

The narrator’s pronunciation is horrible. I keep having to pause and repeat her phrases to my husband so we can have a laugh. It isn’t just a few more obscure UK terms. It’s general terms or location names as well. The story is okay as far as cozy mysteries go, but the narration does get in the way.

Wonderful debut British cozy!

I really enjoyed Murder in the Margins! The characters are likable and interesting. The cozy mystery kept me guessing and the story moved along at a good pace. Penelope Parish is selected for a Writer in Residence position at The Open Book and she heads off to England. She has writer’s block on her second book and she hopes the change of scenery will help. The bookstore is involved with Worthington Fest but when Penelope finds the event Chairwoman, she becomes a suspect. Penelope, Mabel, Figgy and McGuire are becoming great friends which adds to the story. The audiobook is very well done and is narrated by Marnye Young. Very enjoyable!

4 and a half

Murder in the Margins is an entertaining cozy mystery with engaging characters and an entertaining plot. I didn't give it a 5 because some parts of the story felt forced and the pace was Penelope was a bit slow putting things together at the end. But overall I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in this series.

The story is good but those accents!

The story is pretty good and engaging. The performance when the voice actor is using her natural accent is good. When she attempts British accents, it's awful! She does not pull it off. It's not endearing it's cringeworthy. One criticism of the story, the insertion of every British-American stereotype is unnecessary. She can't manage to drive right hand drive, she didn't know crisps are potato chips, that cider is alcoholic that Brits dislike uncouth Americans (ALL). Uggh! So unnecessary and distracting!
