Survival can be a lonely existence...or not. The reality of the situation always comes down to a simple decision: What kind of world do you want to build?
The survivors have come to settle in the mountains of Wyoming, fighting day in and day out to establish a home for themselves in a near-empty world. Things are good at first; scavenging is a workable, short-term solution that seems to be providing all they need.
But they know that it’s only a matter of time before the food runs out. They need to scramble to find a sustainable solution before the clock stops, and for a little handful of people up in the mountains, the odds don’t seem very favorable.
Further south, a new band of people migrates across the map, running on fumes and searching desperately for a place to settle. All around them, as resources run thin, the world grows colder and more violent.
It’s getting worse out there, always getting worse, and it’s starting to look like survival might just depend on how violent they’re willing to get....

In Boston, a battalion of light infantry struggles to maintain order as a new disease turns people into sadistic, laughing killers. As the numbers of infected grow, the battalion loses control, and the soldiers find themselves fighting for their lives against the very people they once swore an oath to protect. During the ensuing collapse, the lost battalion learns the Army is still holding out in Florida, which has been cleared of the infected. Beautifully written, exciting, believable.
If you like survival and apocalyptic stories these characters are for you. Please make sure you read book one first. The writer's ability to infuse real world factors into a new and broken world is quite amazing and at times breathtaking. Quite honestly, can't remember being engrossed in a book like this one in a long time. Story, characters, and performance are unforgettable.
One of the most interesting aspects for me and it is how characters deal with conflict when the rules of the old society no longer exist to provide a framework. Some apocalyptic books glaze over this. Not here. Leadership, character flaws, identity, cultures, another factors all come into play and a way that feels real.
Big fan of R. C. Bray, but this might be his best one yet.
